This was beautiful. I got quite choked up at the end because you've created a reunion I desperately want to happen and you did it so well. You acknowledged the awkwardness of the moment and the difficulties still to come but none of that mattered because the tenderness shown by your Penny convinced me she would help Desmond readjust to life and they would make it work between them. This has so many poignant observations, such as Penny's memories returning at Desmond's familiar lovemaking. I also loved the description of Desmond's body (ankle freckles!) and I don't just mean that in a shallow way but how it was described so lovingly through Penny's eyes, with so much awe and love and, you know, a little bit of lust. The “I love you, Penny” was the perfect ending because we've heard him say those words in much different circumstances. I wish I could say more but this have left me at a lost for words so I think I need to leave it at this for now.
*Admires your icon.* You have me blushing massively - I'm incredibly happy that this worked so well for you! It was a really enjoyable challenge to write this, trying to balance the established and unavoidable angst with what I hope will be happier elements of any reunion between these two, so it's good to hear that it rang true for you.

Just a wee tad, yeah. ;)

I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right: most of canon's "I love you, Penny"s have been... less happy than one might hope, shall we so. Here's hoping the Powers That Be manage to fix that at least somewhat - and that we all have fun trying to do something about it as well!
Again, really glad you liked this - boatloads of thanks for your extremely kind support.
Well, thank you so much for writing this. Although the comment about the wine made me think this was happening in Australia, not California, I'd like to think there is a hotel somewhere where all your reunions and tentative first steps into a new world - Jack and Sayid, Alex, Danielle and their family, Des and Pen - are happening simultaneously.
You and Janie need to make a Des/Pen icon. I'm not sure what you could call it. After reading this I feel it can't be anything too snarky. Maybe Great Expectations?

There is indeed! My line of thinking is just that Dharma/Hanso's corporate backers are desperate to seem munificent, or at least sorry, in the public spotlight, and have therefore put the survivors up at a hotel that's posh enough to have good wine selections in its mini-bar. Not that most of the survivors probably wouldn't be grateful for a flea-ridden Super 8 at that point...
"Great Expectations" would be a good candidate for the next round of the Decent Ship Names Campaign. Desmond's canon behaviour would seem to merit something more like Pound Foolish, but I think your suggestion works better. ;)
