Oh, hon, this is such a magnificent fic! And I like it even better with images! You've created such a fully realized universe out of such a tiny snippet in the film. I'm impressed with how you fleshed it out. So glad to see Nicholls live on (even in pain) and find a measure of happiness. It's a life he couldn't have lived without the war, so that's both haunting and bittersweet and you've given it all the right shadings of sadness and loss.
The bit with the horses they couldn't save killed me but knowing that they tried, and sometimes succeeded, is incredibly moving. Wonderfully done! ♥
Aww, thanks. I'm really glad that this wound up working for you. I think the film's version of Nicholls just demanded to live on outside canon some how. There really isn't any scenario where he'd ever be okay, exactly, but there is indeed something about a measure of happiness where it's possible.
