“Jinki-oppa, where is he??” Syohyun asked in a whisper as the girls entered the house quietly.
“Hm? Who?” he asked with a puzzled look, which earned him a bonk on the head. She just sighed, putting him off as a lost cause.
The five slipped about the house, poking into rooms in search of Lee Taemin.
Key was found at the kitchen stove, shoving something into the oven.
“Key-oppa, have you seen---“ Jaelin began, and his spine stiffened.
“Seen who? I mean, what? I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
“You know what I’m talking about, Kim Kibum. What’s this all about?” she frowned, placing her hands on her hips.
Jinah gave a little gasp. “I know what’s going on!”
Key’s face became grim. “You do?” he groaned.
“You guys aren’t ready yet!!” she exclaimed softly, and Key hung his head in shame, followed by Onew.
The girls shook their heads, putting down a box on the table.
“What’s that?” the two asked.
“A cake Jaelin-eonni made…” Eunkyun spoke up, and Key sighed.
“I just barely put mine in the oven…”
Moments later, Jonghyun stumbled out of the bedroom sleepily, wearing pajamas.
“Hyung, what’s---MISAO?!” he said, nearly tripping over his pants, and scrambled back into the bedroom.
Misao mentally head-desked as her friends tried to hold in their laughter.
He came back out in normal clothes, giving everyone a bright, embarrassed smile.
“Why is everyone here so early?” he asked, trying to rub the last bits of sleep out of his eyes.
“Well, we wanted to surprise Taeminnie…is he still sleeping?” Misao spoke finally, and Jonghyun nodded, yawning.
“Well you surprised us! We haven’t even finished getting everything ready yet…” Key pouted.
“…where’s Minho?” Onew asked as the eight stood by the table.
“I saw him walk into the other room earlier…” Key noted as they all looked down the hallway. Minho came out, frowning in concentration with a card in his hand.
“Oh…good morning everyone~” a warm smile came over his face as he placed the card down on the table.
“What’s wrong, oppa?” Eunkyun asked, and Minho sighed.
“Our birthday card…I wanted to write something special, but no matter what I add, it never seems to be enough…” the slight frown returned.
“I’m sure that anything you say will mean something special to him regardless~” Jinah said in support, and everyone nodded.
A warm, familiar smell began to arise from the oven.
“Oh!” Key rushed over and removed the cake, placing it on the counter. He began to work on the frosting with great speed, and the others sat on the couch in silence, praying that the birthday boy wouldn’t wake up too soon.
With a sigh of finality, Key collapsed on the couch, finished with the cake.
An awkward silence passed, until it was broken by Syohyun.
“The house looks so…empty… …We should decorate~!!”
“With what?” Jonghyun asked, and she pulled out a bag from seemingly nowhere.
“Look! Streamers! And other sparkly…things…”
No one questioned her. Random things like this had become normal between them.
With more tape than they cared to admit, shiny streamers and swirly, hanging decorations were strung about the house. Glitter and confetti was strewn over the table and kitchen counter.
“Ready now?” Jinah asked with a smile, and the four boys nodded. Now all that was missing was the one whose birthday was being prepared for.
Stealthily, the nine crept into the bedroom that the boys all shared. Slipping over to the second bunk bed silently, they all piled onto the bottom bed, and Jinah pulled out a small feather from the pillow. As everyone waited anxiously, she stood on the edge of the bed and poked her head up over the top bunk to find the still-sleeping maknae. Reaching over, she brushed the feather across his cheek. He shifted in his sleep and rubbed the spot, eyes still shut tightly. Jinah pouted, and turned to Plan B. She ran the feather across his upper lip, just below his nose. His eyes squinted tighter as his nose twitched.
“Ahh….ahhhhh---“
Jinah ducked back under, and they waited.
“CHUUU!!”
They heard the sheets above moving as Taemin got up. He looked across the room.
“Jonghyun-hyung?”
The bed was empty……Below Jonghyun’s bunk?
“Key-omma?”
No Key either.
“Onew-hyung?”
No one lay in the middle bed.
“Minho-hyu---WHA??!?” he said in surprise as he poked his head below his own bunk to find all of his friends beneath.
“SURPRISE~!!!! Saengil Chukha Hamnida Taeminnie~!!” they all called as he gawked at them in wonder.
They un-piled themselves from the small bed and filled the room. “Come down!” the other nine urged.
He climbed down halfway until Minho grabbed him by the waist and swept him off the ladder; they all giggled.
“You guys---!!” The newly sixteen-year-old was speechless as he was bombarded by hugs from his companions, as well as by nine jumbled birthday wishes.
“Come outside! Wait till you see the rest of the house!” Syohyun said happily, and skipped out of the room, followed by everyone else.
“WAHH!! So pretty~! *O*” he gaped in awe at the glittering decorations, his bright smile never leaving his face.
“Look look look! You have two cakes!” Jaelin uncovered the one she made and placed it next to Key’s.
Taemin laughed and his smile only widened.
“Taemin-ah, this is a card that your hyungs made…” Minho said with a smile, and Eunkyun pulled out a card as well.
“From KanaKo~” she handed it to him.
“Ah! Which do I read first??” with an adorable, puzzled expression, he opened up the girls’ card and read aloud:
“Dear Taeminnie~
We remember when we first met you…when you were a little mushroom kid and you seemed much younger than you actually were. How time flies! Now, after just one year, you’ve grown so much! The mushroom is gone, and a very mature young man has taken its place. Although, you’re still adorable either way~ ^^;
We hope that you enjoy your sixteenth birthday, and that we can make you smile a lot today! :D
Don’t stop being happy! You always make everyone’s day brighter with your happiness~
Stay in good health, and don’t get too skinny! Eat a lot today, okay? ^^

Since our trainee days, we’ve all been friends. Before we debuted. Before we became the brilliantly shining SHINee.
And now, more than a year has passed and look where we stand now; look at how successful we’ve become.
We began as five teens idolizing noonas, and now we are here - just over a year later and we’ve become so much more. We’ve all matured a lot since then…
You have matured so much, Taemin.
We can’t believe that the young man standing before us was the bowl-haired boy that became part of the SHINee team when we were placed together what seems like ages ago…but in reality, it has only been a short time.
But no matter what, you will always be our little mushroom, our little maknae, our little Taeminnie~
We’d all like to say a few words individually…
Onew: Taemin-ah, you are an exceptionally hard worker! You always diligently practice on improving your dancing, and it’s really admiring! But even the hardest workers need a break! Don’t forget to get enough rest! ^^
Jonghyun: Taemin-ah, being so young, you have a lot of spirit~ You always smile no matter what, and it’s inspiring! You’re very energetic, and I want to be determined and hard-working like you! :D

The five boys gathered in a tight embrace, and were joined by the girls for a big group hug.
Taemin laughed, wiping the rest of the tears away.
“Thank you everyone!”

Later that evening, the ten friends found themselves on the back porch as the sun began to set.
“How pretty~” a few whispered as their eyes were all captured by the sight.
They sat down in one long row across the porch, hand in hand.
Onew, Syohyun, Jonghyun, Misao, Taemin, Jinah, Key, Jaelin, Minho, Eunkyun
All ten of them watched as the sky was painted different shades of orange, red, pink, and purple with the sun sinking below the horizon.
This was the way it should be. This was something that should never change.
