home is a feeling i've buried

"Can't believe you grounded me," Enfys mutters mutinously once John's got the car started and has pulled out into the road.

"Yes, love, I'm sure it's a bloody shock when there are consequences to the things you do." There's an edge to what'd ordinarily just sound teasing and it quiets her for a while, leaves her staring out the car window and (much to her father's intense relief) silent when she'd otherwise be prodding at him that the damn light has changed, Da.

"Where's your phone?" he asks, absently, too used to her retreating into text messages when she doesn't feel like talking to him.

"Gave it to Blake."

"You what?"

Enfys is quietly grateful for the fact they were already stopped at an intersection. "He's going to buy me a new one."

"I bet he bloody is! Get it back, Enfys."

"No. Can Garion still come over after school? I have to tutor him."

"--what?"

"Tutor. Garion. School. Can he?"

"Next week."

"Fine."

"Get your phone back."

"Shan't."

"Disobedient brat."

"'m already grounded."

"I noticed!"

"Deli's here."

"--right." He pulls in and catches her elbow before she can finish opening the door, leaning over to kiss her forehead. "Stop being such a stroppy little tart, will you?"

"Oooh, he wonders where I get that from." Enfys gives him a little shove and slams the car door behind her, harder than she meant to.

(No, he doesn't.)
