Pi’s voice was angry, hurt, and accusing, “It’s your fault!  If you just could have…”

“Could have what Pi?” Ryo’s voice was tired.  “I - I didn’t…”

“If, if he loses his memory, I,”

“You’ll what?  Pi, you can’t -“

The click of the phone hanging up cut him off.

He was there when Ueda woke up.

He wasn’t allowed in the room though.

But when Ueda had woken up, Ryo had been there.  The one way glass window was the only thing that had separated them.  But because Ueda couldn’t see him, Ryo let his tears fall.

I wish you a good life.  Without me.

He kept the photos the couple had taken together.  Pi, Ueda’s older brother, made sure that Ryo was not allowed to go to the same college as Ueda.  So, the two were really taking separate paths.

How ironic it was that Ryo had been the one wanting to separate in the beginning.

Ryo let his fingertips touch the picture.  And he couldn’t stop the tears from falling.  These pictures were the only “Ueda” he was allowed to touch.

He hung them on his wall a day later.

“Hey, Ryo!  Wait up!”

Ryo heard running footsteps behind him and he turned expecting to see his best friend.  After he had gone to college, he had met Kamenashi Kazuya.  The boy had helped him get over his nightmares and his regrets about Ueda.  He never really told Kazuya Ueda’s name, but Kazuya knew pretty much everything already.

His greeting died on his lips.  He stood, dumbshocked as the boy approached.

Kazuya laughed.  “What’s the matter, Ryo?  You look like you’ve seen a ghost.  Come on, you’ll scare my girlfriend.”

Ueda Tatsuya shyly smiled at Ryo, “Nice to meet you, Nishikido-san.  I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Ryo ended up listening to the story of how the two had gotten together.  He didn’t enjoy one bit of it, but he kept a smile on his face.  Maybe because he was happy for Kazuya.  But maybe because he was just glad to see Ueda again.

The way that you looked at Kazuya.  The way that you two secretly held hands under the table.  The way that your breath slightly hitched when Kazuya brushed his lips against your ear.

I’ve missed that.

“You, isn’t that -?”

Ryo frantically shook his head at the waiter.

Ueda blinked confusedly.  “What?”

Jin, though called an idiot, seemed to get what Ryo was trying to say.

“Nothing, what would you like to order?”

He wouldn’t ruin this.  Ueda deserved Kazuya, not him.  At least Kazuya could make him happy.

Things were okay.  At least Ryo thought so.

He got to see Ueda every day.  Kazuya was always with him though.  One day, Ryo had the chance to run into Ueda alone.

“Oh, hi, Nishikido-san,” the fine arts student clutched his sketchbook close to his heart and blinked up at Ryo through thick lashes.

Ryo tried not to look down at Ueda, “Where’s Kazuya?”

Ueda frowned, “He’s taking a test.  He told me to go ahead and get lunch with you.”

Ryo tried to squash the butterflies in his stomach and turned away from the boy immediately.  “I can’t today,” he tried to keep his voice clipped and devoid of emotion.

“What?”

“I have to go somewhere else for lunch.”

“Do you hate me?”

Ryo’s heart pounded at the accusation and he closed his eyes in pain before turning around and looking at the boy.  “No, I -“

“You always avoid me,” continued Ueda, biting on his lip looking more unsure of himself as every moment passed, “ and Kazuya.  Do you think…?”

“It’s, it’s,” he shook his head and turned away.  “I can’t tell you.”

And he fled before the boy could say anything else.

-----

He touched the photos on his wall.  A picture of Ueda on him on their first date.  He remembered it so well.  Ryo had been the one to ask of course, because he was the more “manly” one of the relationship, and Ueda had gladly accepted.  They had gone out on an amusement park and halfway they had gotten ice-cream and decided to take pictures with Ryo’s phone.  When Ueda was concentrating on taking a picture, Ryo had claimed there was a piece of ice cream on Ueda’s lips and leaned in and caught him full on the lips.  Ueda took the picture and Ryo had it sent to all of their friends.

Another one was a picture of Ryo’s eighteenth birthday.  Some of his friends and Ueda took him out drinking for the first time.  Ryo found out that he didn’t get drunk easily and Ueda got drunk from the first drink.  The day afterward was when the picture was taken.  The two had ended up curled asleep with each other and Pi had snuck in and taken a picture.

He missed Ueda.

Kazuya’s voice sounded hurt over the phone.  “Why did you?”

“I don’t have to eat lunch with him, Kazuya,” he points out.

“But, when I found him he was crying.  You didn’t have to do that either.”

Now Kazuya’s voice sounded sarcastic.  Ryo flinched inwardly.

“I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to make him cry.  But I really had somewhere else to go.”

There was a sigh.  “I’m sorry, Ryo.  I just don’t like seeing him cry.”

Ryo loosed a shaky breath.  “Sorry.”

The truth was, he didn’t like seeing Ueda cry either.

He caught Ueda in his house the next day.  Looking at the wall with the photos.

“You forgot something at class today.  Picked it up for you.”

“Really?  Should I come get it?”

“Nah.  Ueda lives near you, he came to -“

“What!?  You gave him my address?”

“Yeah, is something -“  A thud.  Ryo hung up hastily and ran to his room.  Ueda had dropped his book; that was what had made the noise.

“I can explain.”

Ueda turned to look at him, and Ryo’s heart skipped a beat.

Ueda seemed to be looking at Ryo as if it was the very first time the two had met after everything had met.

As if he remembered.

When Ueda lifted a hand to touch his cheek, Ryo was crying.

You remember me.
