Kings

There's a kind of twisted unintentional  Irony to the series 'Kings', like a sad joke that makes you shake your head at the bullheadedness of the storytellers that crafted it in the first place.

Maybe you've heard of the show at this point?  It's a quasi-modern retelling of the story of David from the Book of Kings.  I'm sure that some of the writers honestly believed that they were being quite crafty with their attempts at innovation.  Making Goliath a model of tank that the enemy uses, making the city of Shiloh look like a cleaner version of New York, with modern technology and a generally American vibe to the place, and most of all making David himself seem like a Kansas farm boy (blue eyes, down home attitude and all).

Worst of all is the undeniable message within this show that you cannot seperate America from the Bible, as if they were almost one and the same.  As if America itself was the direct result of christian ideals.  Not to mention that every character that believes in God is good in this story, and every character that doesn't is evil.

The problem is that I think the writers haven't checked their allegorical compasses.  The story of David (and this is widely accepted) is a justification for the Devine Right of Kings.  The King that God empowers, the King that God makes undefeatable, the King and Conquerer whose providence is devine with hands drenched in blood whose people should NEVER question him.  This is David.

This is about as unamerican as you can get.

Where is the system of checks and balances and three branches of government set up to keep the power out of the hands of tyrants?  The Devine Right of Kings was one of those major issues we fought the Revolutionary War to dispell.

Not to mention the creepy vilification of those that happen simply to believe in something else.  America is, and always has been a pluralistic nation and if we are to protect religious freedom here we must also protect the freedom to not believe.  I find myself getting highly uncomfortable when I see shows designed to encourage peasants to hate non-believers.  Cause that's honestly what this show seems to be so far.
