I've seen a few episodes of "Horders" on A&E. These people have basically destroyed their lives by collecting crap. Fairly consistently, when the therapist gets the person to finally discuss why they hoard, it comes down to "I needed something to live for."
I think facing the meaninglessness of life is probably one of the hardest things for the human mind to deal with in a healthy way. Self destructive behavior is the long suicide, a reaction to the realization of the meaninglessness of life.
Rebellion is creating your own meaning in face of the big nothing. Even rebellion is hard to maintain. It needs to shift into different forms over time in order keep the mind attracted to it.
Self discipline is the key to successful rebellion. i.e. Even if you can have no control over the objective meaning of life, you can actively control yourself. This self discipline is a continual re-devotion to the cause of rebellion. It is the water, fertilizer and sunshine that makes it grow every day.
