Leeks in the Kitchen

Apr 08, 2006 21:25

When Caroline was visiting, she and I were admiring our weekly produce basket. Bonnie was in the bathroom applying make-up as we were all going out that evening to dinner at Tamal in SF. I remarked about some rather small leeks by exclaiming, “What’s with these small leeks?!” to which Bonnie replied, “What leeks?”
“These little ones in the kitchen!” I said. I then realised they were pretty wet and shook them off, then saying “Now I’m all wet!

Bonnie came out of the bathroom moments later and shouted “Where are the little leaks?!” and Caroline and I both pointed to the produce basket, and in a totally ‘Duh!’ way said “Right there!” in unison.

Bonnie began laughing hysterically and Caroline and I were very confused. I asked if they were actually leeks, or just some sort of largish green onions. When Bon stopped laughing, she pointed to the ceiling and said “I thought you meant leaks.”

Really fun concept - latin fusion cuisine, with a heavy colonial Mexican hand. Tapas-style menu, with small plates of newly interpreted mostly Mexican staples, tamales, epanadas, etc. Started with tuna ceviche: ginger, mango, cilantro, sesame oil, tamari,lime... served in a martini glass with long crisp plantain strips... 3 miniature deep-fried crab cakes with chipotle aioli and guacamole... corn epanaditas with queso oaxaca and wild mushrooms, topped with chopped onion and cilantro relish... the tamale of the day: huitlacoche! black corn fungus- it's smoky and delicious! finally a chile relleno stuffed with goat cheese, topped with orange blossom cream and adobo sauce. the decor was superfun, very much julie taymor in frida-influenced; bright pink and milagros everywhere. bit pricey given the small plates, but i'd go back.
