Any ideas on napping away from home....

My daughter is 8 months old now, and we've been really successful in getting her to fall asleep on her own without props. She rarely cries longer than 15 minutes when we lay her down, and normally is asleep in less than 10 minutes.

So now the problem I'm running into is that if I'm away from home at naptime or bed time and there's no place to lay her down (she sleeps fine if she had a playyard or a crib to rest in) I can't get her to fall asleep while I'm holding her. She just plays with my shirt or tries to roll out of my arms or looks around at who is talking. Eventually she just gets overtired and throws an impressive screaming fit, and I have to leave so she'll nap in the car.

The kicker is that she WILL fall asleep cuddling grandparents, her dad, the church nursery workers, and family friends so it's just me that she won't relax with. My friend thinks it's because my talking distracts her, but even if we're home and it's just the two of us, she won't lay back on me.

It used to work really well to rock her to sleep in her carseat, but now she gets really upset when we try that - I think it's because she feels confined.

So I'm considering rocking her to sleep just for a couple naps a week so she can learn to relax with me when we're away from home. I've just been in too many situations, especially since there's been lots of graduation parties and things like that with my family lately, where she's missing naps, getting really cranky and it's been throwing off the rest of her day. Any ideas or experience with this?
