I remember seeing you the first day. It was long ago now but in reality it feels like it was just yesterday. It feels like the years have blurred. It feels like my years spent with you have rushed past me, as if, in a heartbeat they were just gone.
You exuded this sort of a presence that just made everyone take notice of you. I remember being in a state of somewhat awe and at the same time trying to dislike you. I didn’t want to like you. Your performances were flashy, you were flashy in general. I couldn’t help but thinking that you would be this stuck up arrogant prick…but….you weren’t. You weren’t like that at all.
The first time I talked to you, you smiled.
It surprised me. You lowered your head and your smile was genuine. Well…the smile you gave me was different to the others I had seen plastered across your smile. This was nothing more then a quirk of the lips but it reached your eyes. It was strange. I couldn’t remember saying anything that should make you smile for real.
I’m not so certain how everything came to a grinding halt. We fell apart. You and I. We stopped talking and I don’t know why. You brushed off my touch and sidled away when I came to stand beside you.
Maybe it is all my fault. I should have demanded an explanation. I deserved as much but I didn’t. You wanted to leave so I let you. You didn’t ask me to wait for you, so I didn’t. You didn’t tell me you loved me so I never returned the sentiment.
For as long as I live though I don’t think I will ever be able to erase those last tears that you showed me. I will never understand.
Those last tears….as real…as that first smile.
