Disturbing the peace in one big Star Wars reference [ota, mtw]

Molly was left reeling as reality shifted and she regained her former self. "Ooooh, no," she muttered, reaching out a hand to the inside of the barracks wall for balance. "This is not good. Really not good." She had been so callous. The other version of herself had helped people only if she had nothing better to do. She wasn't bothered so ( Read more... )

Will comes out of his cabin and stares at all the commotion in bemusement.

"Goodness, how very strange."

Molly grins at the boy, around the age of one of her younger siblings. His reaction, though, really isn't what she would expect from a child. "Not a big Star Wars fan, then?" she asks.

Liking or knowing Star Wars has never been a requirement for appreciating music and a light show though. Molly's brothers and sisters have always been much more enthusiastic about Molly's ridiculous displays, whether they involved Star Wars or not.

"You're the second person to mention that to me. I've never heard of it, I'm afraid."

He'd figured out earlier that it was because he was from a time before that film was made. It was very odd to hear of something that would happen in the future from humans.

Molly nods. "It's pretty popular, and I've always liked it. No big deal if you haven't." Well, it is sort of a big deal, considering that she calls her siblings the Jawas and her mentor Obi-Wan, but she wouldn't press the issue. It wasn't as if televisions were in ready supply here to remedy the lapse in the boy's film education.

She smiles a little more gently at him. "Do you not like fireworks either? This was inspired by a sort of cross between the two."

"They were very bright. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it before."

Bright both in their appearance and in magic. A sort of magic he had never sensed before.

"I do like a lot of noise and color," she admitted, "And these ones were even practical. They were a message for someone."

Molly's power, while it might be weaker in some areas than that of her mentor, certainly had its bright points. Illusion had always been one of them, right from her unintentional very first use of magic.

"Weren't you worried that someone else might notice it first?"

The only time he had experimented with such noticeable magic it had nearly brought the powers of the Dark down on him.

"We're fairly safe inside these walls, I think," she told Will. Then she winked and added, "And I'm good at disappearing when I need to." More hiding than disappearing, but if the child were a layman, it would seem remarkably similar. If he were from the supernatural side of things, there was no need for Molly to give a full summary of her powers.

"The walls are warded against the creatures of the wood," he agrees solemnly. "But we do not know how much they can sense of what goes on here or how far that protection may reach."

"Like I said, it was a message for someone." Molly shrugs. "I want my mentor to me sooner rather than later for exactly the reasons you outlined, and honestly? Big and flashy seems safer than sitting here yelling a wizard's name and seeing who else shows up."

She smirks, knowing full well that not many people other than Harry would agree with this evaluation of her actions. Molly and her mentor do fit together pretty well. "At least this way no one except its intended recipient knows exactly who the message was for."

"It still seems like a rather large gamble. What if someone else had shown up first?"

It seemed to Will that there must be more secure ways of passing on a message.

"If someone else had shown up first," Molly said slowly, "I'm sure I would have managed something." Her words were accompanied by a narrowing of eyes in concentration as she focused her will. By the time she'd gotten halfway through her statement, Molly was speaking from what appeared to be thin air.

Will observes with some surprise.

"Now that is a skill I have never seen before."

Molly drops the veil and shrugs once she is visible again. "I'm not talented at fighting, but I'm good at avoiding it when I don't need to defend anyone."

She looks at him more closely again, wondering why he seems so old for his age. With so many siblings, Molly has a good idea of what to expect from a child at any age. And the boy just doesn't fit. What happened to him? "I'm Molly," she tells Will, extending her right hand and offering a friendly grin.

Will takes her hand and shakes it. He was beginning to grow very curious about these human magic-users. They had power, he could feel it. But it was a sort of power that felt completely different from anything he had known in his own world.

"How do you do? My name is Will."
