It was like the folder had called to her. She had been wandering aimlessly around the barracks, lost in thought and eyeing the woods beyond the fence. On her third pass around, she passed the Giving Tree, looking at the items beneath it curiously.
She hadn't really anticipated there being anything for her. She hadn't been the most social person in the barracks, preferring to spend time alone, contemplating escape and wondering what Castle everyone was up to back home. She'd spoken to few people here, and most certainly hadn't asked anyone for anything.
Still, the folder attracted her attention. It was a simple file folder, completely unassuming as it sat there, propped against the base of the tree. She had glanced around to see if anyone was watching, then bent to pick up the folder.
When she opened the folder, she almost dropped it in shock. It was her mother's file. She flipped through the pages quickly, as she knew the contents by heart, and determined that it was complete, or as complete as it had been the last time she'd seen it, on the impromptu murder board she'd set up in her apartment. She closed the folder and hurried to her cabin, hiding it under her makeshift cot. Then she set out for supplies.
She headed for the building that seemed to have been a store at one time. She found two large pieces of plywood and, with quite bit of effort, dragged them back to her cabin and propped them up against the outside wall. Taking the folder from her hiding spot, she began arranging the murder board as she remembered it
from home. She was thankful for the tape still attached to many of the pieces, and she was able to get the other pieces to stick on their own.
When she was done, she sat on the ground in front of the boards, looking over her work. One good thing about being stuck in this place…she'd have plenty of time to work her mom's case. In the back of her mind, Kate couldn't help but wonder if that was a good thing or not.
She sighed. At least it was something to do.
