[Barracks; Open to All; Multiple threads welcome]Shall the Youngest Open the Oldest Hills

It hadn't taken Will long to realize that his promise not to leave the Barracks rather severely limited his ability to distract himself from his own worries.  Over the past few days he had explored everywhere in the small enclosure he could reach.  He had spent a few days attempting to read through what there was in the library, but after a while ( Read more... )

Will glances up solemnly. "Don't worry, I am being careful. I shouldn't like to get sick again. Not now when I am finally getting better."

He blinks in confusion at the last part. "I would like to be useful, but there isn't anything here for me to do."

"I had hepatitis," Will says simply. "Two months ago. The doctor said I was over it, but I'm still not as strong as I was before. That's what I'm supposed to be doing now. Recovering, I mean."

THIS THREAD IS FINALLY HAPPENING. merlinianblood February 1 2011, 16:14:10 UTC
Dave, like Will, is restless. He learned his lesson about wandering in the woods, though; after discovering that creepy noose-tree, he decided it might be wiser to hang around the barracks, certain that he'd find something to do.

Alas, he was so very wrong.

On top of his boredom, he's only just realized that his Encantus is home. This equals one bored, slightly panicked Dave.

He wanders past Will in a bit of a daze, but stops dead in his tracks only a few feet away. Then, very slowly, he turns back around to face the young boy. "You're-"

Me. Fourth grade me.

"No way."

Will glances up at the older boy curiously and answers in a light British accent. "Pardon?"

British me?

Dave cocks his head.

"Is your name David Stutler?"

Will blinks and tilts his head in the opposite direction. "My name is Will Stanton."

Cold isn't Juliet's friend. She learned that during the Gala, but back in the barracks, it's even more unnerving. Trying to keep the little cabin she and Meredith were using as a clinic warm was a hassle. She's a lot of things, but Laura Ingalls, she wasn't.

And the recent uprising of monster attacks hasn't gone unnoticed by her. She's been digging through the buildings again, trying to find weapons of any kind, and coming up with very little. After a sudden crash, she exits the last building she's chosen to examine, covered in dirt and dust and coughing. As she wraps the cloak she filched from the Gala around herself, she stops short at the sight of the boy.

"Hi," she says without a trace of the sudden bit of awkwardness she feels in her tone. There's probably something vaguely embarrassing about the village doctor staggering out of a building after very nearly causing the whole thing to collapse on her head. She should know better than that.

Will tilts his head in curiosity as he watches the woman come out of the buildings. "Are you quite alright?"

"I'm fine," she says, quickly enough for it to be an automatic response, but deadpan enough to make it clear she's aware that it is. She is fine. A little shaken, maybe, but that's all. "It's not very sturdy. I'd be careful if you're looking for a place to play."

She doesn't even think how condescending that might be- she's accustomed to the few children that ran about in the DHARMA camp, always finding dangerous places to play and her having to shoo them off with a laugh. One day it might occur to her that this isn't that place anymore. It had central heat and air, for one thing.

Will regards her seriously, with a faintly puzzled expression on his face. "Why would I want to play in a place like that? I'm more fond of reading and exploring. Not that I can do much of either, here."

Mogget has also taken to skulking around and observing people, though from a slightly different angle. He looks down at Will from the roof of the empty building, sharp eyes noting the scar on the boy's arm.

"That mark isn't natural. How did you get it?"

Will stares up at the cat solemnly, feeling a little lost.

"I cant remember. It seems like the kind of thing that should have stuck in my mind. But I can't seem to remember anything about it."

Well, that's suspicious.

"Sounds as though someone has been meddling with your mind as well as your body." The cat yawns. "I don't suppose you're likely to find out here."

Will shakes his head. "That isn't the only thing I've forgotten, I don't think. I've been thinking that it was because I was so sick. The doctor said that can happen, sometimes."

And he hoped that was all it was. But that didn't explain any of the strange feelings he'd been having. Or that sense of urgency that never really left.
