Hi again. My sixth year of making music for this challenge was, well, challenging. After struggling with inspiration for a while, I went back to a community member's suggestion that they would like to hear a song about Zack Allen. While Zack himself did not prove to be an especially inspirational character for me, Jeff Conaway's recent passing got me thinking about the many people involved with Babylon 5 who died before their time. This is a song for them (and I suppose for anyone else, real or fictional, who needs to be memorialized) borrowing imagery from "Sleeping in Light." My other goal for this song was to write something that was comforting without being religious, in deference to JMS's particular views on that subject. (c:
So, it's kind of an oblique subject this year again, and I'm not sure I'm entirely happy with the result, but I hope you like it anyway. As always, if you enjoy this, you may want to know that more of my music (fannish and otherwise) can be found at
my website.

(voice, acoustic guitar)
& so we all have gathered like we always used to do
& we sit around this table but we sit here without you
& all these sneaking silences will betray you are not there
just another long remembrance for another vacant chair
so when our cups are empty we will fill them to the brim
in the names of those now gone beyond the rim
(chorus)
so when you've left us I'll see that you still will leave a trace
& carry you inside me though I cannot take your place
I'm clinging to your memory when the light has gotten dim
so not all things shall pass beyond the rim
our mouths are full of stories that we tell lest we forget
if we don't lose sight of these then we will not have lost you yet
with all the details fading from what we think that we still know
let our laughter chase the sadness when it pulls us down below
the edge of grief brings comfort though it tears us limb from limb
as we speak of those who've gone beyond the rim
(chorus)
some say there is a heaven where the best of souls will rest
if they only said the right words, if they only passed the test
to live like this life matters til the moment it must cease
is the only way I've ever found to reach that kind of peace
so let the love you left behind become your sacred hymn
until all of us must pass beyond the rim
(chorus)
it's in your steps we carry on when the future looks so grim
so not all things shall pass beyond the rim
I'm clinging to your memory when the light has gotten dim
so not all things shall pass beyond the rim
