HIP-HOP ARTIST COMMON TO HEADLINE 40 ACRES FEST

Chicago-based hip-hop artist, Common, along with special guest Brownout!, will be headlining this year's 40 Acres Fest music portion hosted by the University Co-op and the Texas Union Student Events Center Music and Entertainment Committee. The show is free and will be held on Saturday, April 1, at 7PM on the Main Mall of the University of Texas campus.

Common is an artist known for his lyrics about love and spirituality. A rapid growth in a genre deemed "socially conscious" has helped propel Common into the mainstream music scene. His latest album Be, which features nine tracks produced by Kanye West, has been certified platinum and was nominated in the 2006 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album.

Brownout!, a side project of local band Grupo Fantasma, is a band whose genre includes an eclectic mix of funk and Latin. Consisting an eight-piece ensemble, they create music that is timeless and honest, keeping the spirit of 70's Afro-Latin and funk music alive while honoring their South Texas roots.

This event is sponsored by the University Co-op and presented by the Texas Union Student Events Center Music and Entertainment Committee (MEC). MEC is an organization that is funded primarily by the Texas Union Fee paid by all students.
