Okay, I'm gonna talk shit about this film, a film I enjoyed, but really a mixed bag.
THE GOOD: Bones, excellent. He had it down pat, manner, speech, 'tude. Spock, B+, at moments, really looked like Nimoy. Checkov, B, a departure, but as the kid of the enterprise, worthy of some accent-based humor.
THE BAD: Who the fuck was that pumped up pretty-boy they got to play Kirk? I mean, Shatner's boots are hard to fill, but find someone with a little charm or charisma. AND I didn't like how they changed the character into a balls-out risk-taking punk. Yeah, Kirk had that streak in him, but WTF, why not just cast Johnny Knoxville? Oh yeah, they changed Spock's character too, getting all snippy with the Vulcan Academy, getting funky with Uhura. Oh, sure, the writers cover their asses on these departures since the space-time continuum is altered- yeah, that's another beef. I have to agree with
Haeddre that the time travel plot is overused and signifies lazy writing.
THE UGLY: How about that product placement? I hope the good people at Nokia and Budweiser were happy with the final cut. Oh yeah, who was Scotty? Was that the freak from trainspotting?
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed it, but the original series was the only commercial TV I was allowed to watch in my first decade on Earth, so it is somewhat sacred. It's like you're a Muppets superfan and somebody tells you they're coming back and you get all excited, then you find out that now they're the Muppet Babies. These kids were like the Star Trek Babies.
Still, looking forward to the next one.
