In one day she lost one child and gained another. A life for a life, a trade she had not chosen. And yet, how could she ever ask for that choice- the child that had grown inside her, a constant companion of evolving dreams, or the child with no one, desperately in need of someone to allow her to dream.
The choice would not, could never be Jane's, with this she must make peace. She would never choose between her children. They remain her's, existing within her and independent of her.
--
She plants a tree for the child she will never know, and their tears are the first water to nourish it.
--
She builds a tree house for the child who never believed she would have anyone again, a place to hide when the world is too much. She threatens to beat up anyone who claims Tasha is too old for a treehouse, and there is no doubt in Tasha or Maura's mind that she means it.
--
She holds Tasha when Tasha can't imagine wanting to be held, because a mother knows when her daughter needs comfort. She teaches her about baseball, how to disarm anyone foolish enough to threaten her daughter, and encourages her to call Bass a turtle just for Maura's reaction.
--
Maura takes Tasha to the lab, unraveling the mysteries of science as they banter over anything and everything. They shop online together, finding Tasha new clothes when her jeans finally are too torn to continue on. She delights in talking about universities and med schools, excitedly planning trips to the ones Tasha deems suitable.
--
Angela fawns over her granddaughter, missing no opportunity to spoil her despite Tasha's reluctance. Pretty soon Angela is boasting to anyone that will listen that her granddaughter can almost cook better gnocchi that she can, and has been accepted for every school she applied, including her daughter-in-law's Alma Mater. No one ever manages to talk to Angela these days without seeing photos of senior pictures and newspaper clippings about Jane and Maura. "My daughter-in-law is a doctor, and pretty soon my granddaughter will be one too. She'll be saving your life any day now," she tells near strangers proudly, "of course my daughter is that cop of you've probably heard of, she got a medal from the city, you know."
--
Maura claims her eyes are irritated by foreign particles, and Jane politely doesn't mention the hives when they move Tasha into her dorm. On the car ride back, Jane doesn't even try to deny her tears, she just tells Maura she'll wear the shoes Maura has begged her to throw out if she breathes a word of it to the guys.
--
That night they sit under the tree, its now majestic branches rustling in the breeze.
Jane raises her beer, waiting for Maura to join with her wine glass.
"To our family," Jane says softly with a smile.
"To our family, that's about to get a bit bigger," Maura replies, grinning.
That's when Jane notices that Maura's glass is filled with grape juice.
