When Percy gets to school that morning, Luke is already pressed up against his locker, smile effervescent, statuesque arms crossed over the number on his baseball jersey, an orange eleven. “Hey, Percy.”
“Luke,” Percy says, then rolls his eyes. The quick swerve serves to disguise how he can’t help honing in how tussled Luke’s hair is this morning, how bright his eyes, but also the bruise on Luke’s cheek, a purplish discoloration that sits on an older scar.
Luke is an anomaly - the handsomest boy in school, a member of practically every club or team, alternatingly a nice ‘big brother’ type and a suspicious jerk. It’s his eyebrows. Although they’re perfectly fair like the rest of him, they slant slightly in a way that makes Percy worry he’ll beam at you in tandem with stealing your lunch money out from under your nose. And you won’t even hate him for it, afterward. You’ll think, gee, that Luke Castellan sure is hot.
“C’mon, Percy,” Grover calls from across the hall, his own eyes flicking every which way. “We’re gonna be late for Mr. Brunner’s myth class. Uh, sorry, Luke.”
Luke shrugs, but his gaze remains heavy on Percy. “That’s cool. See you in gym?”
“Maybe,” Percy says with a shrug of his own. He hurries out of Luke’s earshot, then asks Grover about the bruise. “He always comes in that way, with some new injury. Isn’t that funny?” As funny as something that wedges a weight in his throat can possibly be, anyway.
Grover’s eyes widen and he glances back over his shoulder, but Luke’s already gone. “I guess so. Didn’t see one today, but he’s the captain of…well, pretty much everything. Jocks play rough, don’t they?”
“Sure,” Percy agrees, except he plays sports often enough, as well. He scored the winning point during his summer camp’s last basketball match and, yeah, maybe Clarise La Rue from the rival team played a bit too hard, but Luke’s bruises don’t remind him of that - the broken arm Luke sported last marking period definitely doesn’t. They remind him of his ex-stepfather, Gabe Ugliano, and that doesn’t make it any easier to concentrate in myth.
Luke pulls him into an alleyway between their school and the barbershop next door upon the end of the day’s classes, his lips at once soft and ravenous over Percy’s, his fingers like steel on Percy’s hips. Luke is always possessive - of Percy most of all, but also his other friends, his backpack, everything, like he thinks the same thing about everyone else that Percy thinks about him, that they’ll rob him blind if he trusts anyone.
“You okay?” Percy asks, the moment they pull apart.

Percy pushes him away reluctantly, then uses the same hand to cup Luke’s bruised cheek. He feels the way it tics and tenses beneath his touch. “You can…” He sucks in a fortifying breath, then continues, “…You’d tell me if everything wasn’t okay at home, wouldn’t you? If your foster father was hurting you?”
His heart begins to thud faster in his chest when Luke’s placid expression twists into a sneer and he draws back. “What kind of question is that?” Luke demands, the palms of both his hands splayed in the air defensively, a makeshift aegis, as if Percy is someone he needs to protect himself.
Percy won’t let him think that - can’t - so he takes a step closer, but Luke only edges back into a dumpster. “I-I just wanna make sure everything’s okay with you, same way you did when my stepfather was around.”
“That’s not the same,” Luke says after a moment, but the words huff out on a quiet, defeated breath. Percy’s never heard Luke talk like that and it’s scary.
“Why not?” he asks, also hushed, even gentle.
Luke’s eyes blaze again, from vivid blue to a lightning-storm gray. “Because I actually like you,” he says, still low. “I don’t think you’re creepy or that you’re some kinda pervert, trying to steal all the underclassmen’s virginities, the way you do me.” Percy stares at him and he mutters, “What, did you think I wouldn’t notice? I’m not dumb, Percy.”
“I know you aren’t,” Percy agrees. “You’re - you’re smart and nice and weirdly good-looking.” Luke’s eyes snap to meet his. Percy smiles wanly. “You’re kind of creepy sometimes, I’ll admit, but I-I like it, Luke; I like you.”
Percy tries not to let Luke break eye-contact, despite how his cheeks uncharacteristically pink, but while it eventually occurs, Luke murmurs, “You’re just sweet-talking me to get into my pants,” under his breath, his own lips canted into a smirk.
“You know it,” Percy replies with a grin. He notes the way Luke’s shoulders slump into a casual pose again, no longer defensive, but hooks his elbow with Luke’s and lets the subject drop. For now.
Luke is important to him. Percy wants to do things with him - give him things - he hasn’t done or given to anyone else. He wants it to be okay to feel vulnerable around Luke, rather than as if they’re both opposing gladiators in the Roman coliseum, but Luke has to learn it’s okay to reciprocate and let his own shields down, too. Luke’s a quick learner, though, and Percy knows they’ll deal with all their obstacles - including Kronos - together.

I really liked it! Poor Luke being beaten by Kronos TOT I really hope he'll find the strengh in himself to truly believe in Percy's words. For now, I just feel like melting because of Luke's smirk and his possessive kisses!ÖÖ
