The Wicked Day - Book Four of the Arthurian Saga -
By Mary Stewart

Summary : Born of an incestuous relationship between King Arthur and his half-sister, the evill sorceress Morgause, the bastard Mordred is reared in secrecy. Called to Camelot by events he cannot deny, Mordred becomes Arthur's most trusted counselor - a fateful act that leads to the "wicked day of destiny" when father and son must face each other in battle.

You do know that I'm not into recs at all... I'm a too lazy gril for that xD But I'll try to talk about some stuff I want to share with you! ;)

My opinion : Okay, I have to admit that until the end I wasn't sure if I like the book or not. Mary Stewart has a really beautiful writing and she does know what she is talking about. But I wasn't sure I would like what she has done about Mordred's character. She made a really interesting and brilliant description of the character and his motives but she made him an "social climber", a man of power... and I wasn't really sure I'd like it and where she would go with that. But sure, Mordred being Arthur's son, is a man who wants power and rules as a proper king. In the end, I do liked Mordred's characterisation. I never was fond of Geoffrey of Monmouth or Sir Thomas Malory's Mordreds because they chose to make him a plain villain without true motives and interests, writing illogical stories... but that was in the spirit of those time literaturies so it is okay I suppose. But I love that some writers, later, decided to really have a look at Mordred's character and tried to explain what could have happened logically^^ And here you are a good interpretation, as plausible as others. (Even if unfortunately the last battle was a great disappointed for me, though, the epilogue is so beautiful and so perfectly describes what I've always deeply feel for Mordred)
So A MUST BE READ if you want to know a little more about Mordred's character without feeling that the writer commiting himself/herself.
