Chapter 7

Chloe looked up from the computer screen and frowned as Oliver strolled into the Watchtower.  “Back so soon?” she queried.

“Meetings didn’t hold,” he said as he leaned down and kissed her hair.  “The director making the presentation had to cry off due to a medical emergency.”

“He’s okay, isn’t he?” she asked, worried.

“”He’s fine.  I should have clarified further; his wife went into early labour with twins.”

“Whoa,” she breathed.  “They are doing well, aren’t they?”

He nodded.  “Exceptionally well.  The babies, both girls, were delivered about an hour ago, and are none the worse for wear after their neonatal adventure.”

Chloe’s eyes sparkled.  “And their mommy?”

“Recovering well after the emergency surgery.”

She heaved a sigh of relief.  “Fantastic.  Last but not least, how’s the brand new papa?”

Oliver grinned.  “Exhilarated, terrified and everything in between.”

Chloe chuckled.  “He’ll be okay once he’s had time to get used to it all.”

“Oh, he’s not worried about having two little girls in the house,” he smirked.  “Believe it or not, he’s freaking out about how he’s going to react when they start dating, and when he has to give them away at their weddings.”

“What?”  she exclaimed.  “But that’s years away!”

Oliver snorted.  “Try telling him that.  But other than that, he’s ecstatic.”

“That’s wonderful news,” she said wistfully, a faraway look in her eyes.  “They must be so happy.”

Oliver’s eyes narrowed and he studied her carefully.  Chloe looked up and noticed him staring at her, and shuttered her gaze.

“Do you have a couple of hours going spare?” she asked suddenly.

“Depends on why you’re asking for them,” he replied with a wink.

She sidled up to him and fingered his collar suggestively.  “I was thinking of trading you sexual favours for a free ride over to the Kent Farm,” she said hopefully.  “I promised Clark I’d spend some quality time with Shelby while he’s out looking for missing Kandorians.”

Oliver nodded to himself.  “I think that’s a fair trade.  Good thing I brought the fast car.”

Oliver sped along the road, glancing occasionally at the young woman beside him as they raced along.  Chloe loved it when he drove with the top down, and he adored the way she just relaxed and let herself unwind as the wind swept her hair this way and that.  She had her feet up on the dashboard this afternoon, and was leaning her head back, soaking up some sun.

Try as he might, he couldn’t stop thinking about Chloe’s reaction to his colleague’s brand new babies.

“Do you want to have kids?” he asked abruptly.

She stiffened.  “Huh?”

“Someday,” he added hastily.  “Sometime in the future.  I mean, all women want children someday, don’t they?  It’s just a general question…I guess with my colleague having twins today…” he trailed off, hoping he hadn’t blown his cover and revealed too much of his desires and expectations.

Chloe shrugged.  “I always thought I wanted kids; now I’m not so sure.”

“Because of your father leaving you?” he asked quietly.

“That’s a significant part of it,” she admitted.  “The last thing I want to do is make the same mistakes with my child that my father made with me.”

“You’d never do that, Chloe.”

She gave him a little smile.  “Thanks.  Then of course, there’s the issue of my Mom’s mental illness…”

“Chloe, you can’t let fear of the unknown keep you from living your life,” he said gently.  “No pregnancy comes with a guarantee of safety.”

“That may be, but it would be irresponsible of me to bring a child into this world if there’s an increased risk of any congenital defects,” she pointed out.

They drove along silently for a while, then after about a minute Oliver spoke.

“What if you did get pregnant?” he queried softly.  “What then?”

She smiled, her eyes warming at the thought.  “Then I’d love that child no matter what, and do everything in my power to make sure that they have the best life and the best Mom ever.”

Oliver grinned “I think you’d make a great Mom,” he said.  Then hastily added, “Just think of the games of Trivial Pursuit you and that kid would enjoy.”

Chloe laughed, and Oliver smiled to himself with a twinge of regret.  It was, he thought, unfortunate that Chloe was kitted up with foolproof contraception.  Now that the idea of a baby was floating around in his mind, he couldn’t think about anything else but making one with her.  He imagined the pure joy it would be to watch Chloe grow big with his child, feel the tiny life kick against her belly from within, share the ecstatic happiness of watching their baby being brought into the world…

He sighed and glanced across at her, thinking it was damn shame he couldn’t get her pregnant just yet.  There and then he resolved to go through her BlackBerry and delete her reminder to get her contraceptive implant replaced.  There was still two years’ efficiency left on the damn thing, but he was a patient man.  He could wait.

“Got any music?” she asked, jerking him back to the present.

“There’s a Jonathan Butler CD in the player,” he replied absently.

“Is he any good?” she asked.

He shrugged.  “I think so.  He’s a South African jazz artist, and this is one of his older albums.  It’s my favourite of his.”

“I’ll give it a shot.”  She pressed play and leaned back, swaying as the music started.

“I quite like this guy,” she said approvingly.  “He has a nice, smooth style.”

“Told you,” he said smugly.

She grinned and continued to enjoy the music…until it got to a certain mellow track which Oliver knew well.

I can feel it, love is in the air

Here for us to take

But the closer that we get to love

The more you pull away

Girl, can it be you’re afraid to love again?

Oliver felt the change in Chloe’s demeanour immediately.  She folded her arms and stiffened, and Jonathan Butler kept crooning on, his words striking a nerve in her heart.

This is where the true love starts

I want you to know,

This time, it’s forever

Jonathan Butler couldn’t have been more right if Oliver had fed him the words through a teleprompter.  He heard Chloe swallow hard beside him, and knew she was doing her level best to ignore the words coming out of the stereo, but failing miserably.

When I hold you in a warm embrace

You try to fight the yearning

I can see the question on your face, baby

Seeds of doubt are turning in your head

What am I supposed to say?

You’ve got my heart, and it’s here to stay

And I’ll be your lover till hell freezes over

“What else is on this disc?” Chloe asked abruptly as she snagged the sleeve from the dashboard.  “Oh look, this track sounds interesting - No Strings, No Ties.  Let’s listen to that one!”

Quickly she pushed the skip button till she got to the annoyingly titled track, then relaxed back in her seat.

“Now that’s more like it,” she said smugly, settling her sunglasses on her face as Jonathan Butler crooned on about simply wanting to have a good time.  “Right up my alley.”

Oliver scowled.  It was the one song on the whole CD that he hated with a passion, and that was long before Chloe came on the scene.

He tightened his hands on the steering wheel.  He wasn’t fooled.  Chloe knew, deep down inside, how he felt about her; she had to know.  But denial was clearly her best friend, and if she couldn’t face the truth from a simple love song, she’d completely wig out and run a mile if he so much as mentioned the word love.

He had to coax her out of that damned shell of hers.  It was just a question of figuring out how.

Oliver pulled up at the Kent Farm and turned off the engine.  Chloe got out of the car and headed in the general direction of the barn.

“Oh, Shelby!” she sang, making a few short whistling sounds.  “Where are you, hun?”

A few seconds later, the golden retriever bounded around the corner at top speed, barking excitedly.  He reared up on his hind legs, jumped up and planted his mucky paws square in Chloe’s middle.  Chloe squealed and landed on her rump with a thud, laughing gaily as she tickled the happy dog behind the ears.

He couldn’t help smiling at the joyful picture she made.  “You’ve got mud in your hair,” he pointed out.  “Among other places.”

“So?” she responded, scrambling to her feet and running in circles round the excitable pooch.  “Come on, boy.  Come on!”  She took off in the direction of the fields, and Shelby, not to be outdone or outrun, followed suit and soon overtook her.

Oliver followed at a more leisurely pace, smiling as girl and dog played a hearty game of tag.  Clearly she wasn’t doing this as a favour to Clark; she was doing it because she was more than happy to spend time with Shelby.

Suddenly he stopped short as the proverbial lightbulb went off in his head.   A slow grin spread across his face.   He knew exactly how to coax her out of that shell.

Chloe had no problem showing emotion to the dog.  And that was the answer he’d been looking for.

He couldn’t give her a baby just yet.

He’d just have to make do with a puppy.  For now.
