Chapter 7
The paediatrician arrived shortly after and examined the baby while Lola took care of Chloe. Oliver waited patiently, breathing a sigh of relief when the paediatrician placed his daughter back in his arms and gave her the all-clear.
“All good here, as well,” Lola added as she finished with Chloe. “Baby’s a good size, not too big, so no tears or stitches needed. You and the baby are both okay to go home today if you want, Chloe, but I’d advise you both stay the night here as a precaution.”
“I’m happy with that,” Chloe said tiredly. “I don’t think I can move for another 24 hours.”
“Thank you much for all your help, Lola,” Oliver said thickly. “We really appreciate it.”
The doctor snorted. “I don’t know what you’re thanking me for, I missed the whole thing,” she said wryly.
Chloe shook her head vehemently. “Not true. You were here for us through the toughest time of our lives, and you went above and beyond to make sure everything would be okay this time,” Chloe said solemnly. “We couldn’t have done this without you. Come here, girl.”
Lola’s eyes looked suspiciously bright. “Aww, shucks,” she said tremulously as she enveloped both of them in a warm hug. “You’re very welcome, and I’m so happy for you both. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter; she’s absolutely beautiful.”

“So, what do you think?” Oliver asked a few hours later as he changed his daughter’s first diaper. “Who does she look like?”
Chloe smiled. “Too early to tell. She got the blonde hair, which we expected; but her eyes are blue, so we won’t know if they’ll be green or brown for a while yet.”
“She’s so beautiful,” he whispered in awe. He finished dressing her and tucked the green monogrammed blanket around her, then carried her to her mother. As soon as she was placed in Chloe’s arms, she whimpered and rooted for the breast.
“Well, this is her second feed in as many hours, so I think it’s safe to assume she’s inherited your appetite,” Chloe remarked as she unbuttoned her gown. The infant latched on with admirable precision and proceeded to feed lustily.
“This is the most precious, most special feeling in the world; I can’t even begin to describe it,” Chloe said reverently, stroking the wispy hair on their daughter’s head. She looked up at him and smiled. “We’re parents, Ollie. We have a baby.”
Oliver lifted her chin with a finger and gazed into her eyes. “You were amazing today. You have been amazing throughout this pregnancy; what with the morning sickness, swollen ankles, labour pains, and you never complained, not even once. I’m so proud of you, and I love you so, so much.”
He leaned down and kissed her tenderly, hoping that she had an idea of just how much he loved her.
“Thank you for not letting me give up on this, Chloe,” he continued. “You’ve made me happier than I could have ever thought possible.”
She grinned up at him, her eyes sparkling. “That goes both ways, my love.”
“I still can’t believe she’s here,” he murmured in awe, stroking his daughter’s downy fair head.
“I still can’t believe that you got her here,” Chloe remarked in admiration. “You were brilliant today.”
“Thanks.” He kissed her forehead. “Aren’t you glad I read all those childbirth books now?”
“Oh God, yes. And you can add your new skills to your resume. Oliver Queen: Entrepreneur, Superhero, and Deliverer of Babies everywhere!”
He shuddered. “Not everywhere; just this one, thank you.”
They gazed at their daughter as she fed, both completely smitten with the tiny bundle of joy that was theirs and theirs alone.
“Do you think she’ll like her name?” Chloe asked, glancing at the monogrammed blanket.
“She’ll love it,” he declared. “It fits right in with the family theme, and if her eyes turn out to be green - and I’m sure they will - then she’ll love it even more.”
Chloe smiled. “I think it’s perfect for her.” She stroked the baby’s smooth cheek, and then frowned. “Oh.”
“What?” he asked, alarmed. “What is it?”
Chloe pouted. “No dimple. I really, really wanted her to have a dimple.”
“Is that all?” he said, relieved. “Chloe, she’s perfect as she is!”
“I completely agree with you there; however, the dimple was non-negotiable.” She gave him a sidelong glance and winked. “That means you still owe me a baby with a chin dimple, so…”
“Don’t test me, woman,” he warned, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “I barely survived this pregnancy with my sanity intact. I can’t even think about making another one so soon!”
“Fine, I’ll wait,” she relented, kissing her daughter’s head. “We’ll be plenty busy with this little lady, anyway.”
As if on cue the baby burped, making them both chuckle loudly.
There was a light knock on the door, and a young orderly peered into the room.
“Excuse me, Mr & Mrs Queen… there are some visitors for you at reception; a man and a woman, but we haven’t let them in.” He wrinkled his nose in distaste. “They’re wearing press passes.”
Oliver exchanged a look with his wife and smiled. “That’s okay, they’re friends. You can send them on up.”
As soon as the door closed, Chloe slapped her forehead. “In all the excitement, I completely forgot to call Lois. How did they know we were here?”
“I left her a message about an hour ago; sent one to Clark, as well.” He flashed his wife a mischievous grin. “I must confess, I deliberately didn’t alert them too soon, because I wanted us to enjoy these first few hours as a family without everyone else. Surely they won’t begrudge us that.”
“Let’s hope not,” she agreed.
There was a light tap at the door. “Yoo-hoo! Can we come in?” Lois called cheerily. “Where’s the baby?”
Oliver sighed. “Much as I would like to wrap my little girl in cotton wool for the rest of her life, it’s about time we shared her with the rest of the family.”
Chloe smiled and handed his daughter to him. He settled her in his arms and leaned down to kiss his wife once more.
“I love you,” he whispered. “Both of you.”
“Love you both, too,” she replied. “So much.”
There was another tap at the door, this time more insistently. “Come on, you guys! We come bearing gifts! Now, where’s my beautiful niece?”
Oliver straightened in anticipation of their visitors. He kissed his daughter’s head and smiled.
“Come with me, Jade Elizabeth Queen,” he said, his chest swelling with pride as he went to open the door. “Time to meet your godparents.”
