Chapter 4

The next two hours were torture - for both of them.  Oliver knelt with his wife and offered support in any way he could; timing her contractions, rubbing her back and holding her hands until the pain rode out.

Chloe was coping well, but for the most part Oliver felt completely helpless at his inability to alleviate her pain.  The contractions were coming stronger now, and closer together, and with each one it was getting more difficult for her to ignore the intensity of the pain coursing through her body.

“Do you remember the first time we made love?” she asked suddenly after a particularly painful contraction subsided.

Oliver smiled.  “I can never forget.”

“I almost wish you would,” she said, some self-reproach creeping into her voice.  “It wasn’t exactly the hook-up of legends, was it?”

“It wasn’t intended to be,” he replied, stroking her hands tenderly.  “I very clearly remember giving you permission to use me.”

“Oh God, don’t remind me,” she said with a shudder.  “I just jumped on you and went for it.”

“You needed it.”  Oliver smiled.  “Funny; it wasn’t meant to be anything special, but…something happened, and everything changed.”

“Not immediately,” she pointed out.  “We made love again in the morning, and then I slapped you around the face.”

He grinned and instinctively touched his jaw.  “True.  I didn’t say anything then, but you nearly knocked my eye out.”

Chloe giggled, then winced as another contraction hit.  She draped her arms around his neck and breathed deeply.  Oliver rubbed her lower back, murmuring reassuringly as the pain receded.

“Third time was definitely the charm, though,” he continued, determined to get her to focus on something other than the pain.  “That was when I knew for sure that there was no going back.”

She nodded.  “That was a game-changer, for sure.”

“Mmm-hmm.  Everything about that day brings a smile to my face.”

She grinned.  “Baby powder.”

“Oh, yeah.  And baby pictures, and tickling…”

“…and cooking, and sex…”

“Really great sex,” he qualified.

“…and Twilight.”

“And Twilight,” he admitted.  He tilted her chin up and rubbed his nose against hers.  “I gave you all of myself that night, Chloe.  I knew then that there would never be anyone else for me but you.”

“I was so scared,” she whispered.  “Scared that I was making a fool of myself, falling in love with you when all you wanted was a bit of fun.”

“I know what I said at the start, but it was never ‘just fun’; not with you,” he said quietly.  He kissed her forehead and held her close.  “We found our way into each other’s hearts and set up camp, didn’t we?”

She leaned back and grinned up at him.  “We definitely did.  And that is the loveliest description of a couple in love I’ve ever heard.”  Her easy expression suddenly morphed into one of pain.  “Ow…oww…”

“Breathe, honey.  Breathe…” She held onto his arms, moaning loudly as the contraction racked her body.

“That one really hurt,” she said shakily, a flash of worry in her eyes.   “They’re coming much closer together, too.”

“Are you ready to leave now?” he asked anxiously.

She nodded.  “We should start thinking about getting ready, yeah.”

“Where’s your bag?”

“Packed and by the door, and the car keys are on the table.”

“Good.”  He glanced down at his pyjama slacks.  “I should get dressed.”

“You’d better shower and shave as well, just in case,” she suggested.  “I have no idea just how long this is all gonna take, but you may not get the chance to wash for a long time.”

“How far apart are you now?” he asked.

“By the time you’re done, I should be down to four, maybe three minutes.”

A frown creased his brow.  “Isn’t that cutting it a bit too close?”

She shook her head.  “I still have hours to go yet.  First baby, and all.”

He smiled wistfully.  “Second, actually.”

“True.”  She waved him away.  “Go get ready.”

Seven Months Ago

“How long do we have to wait?” he asked anxiously.

Chloe sighed.  “You saw what it said on the box, honey.  Five minutes.”

“Hasn’t it been five minutes already?” he grumbled, staring pointedly at his watch.  “I want to check it.  It has to be ready now.”

“A watch pot never boils, and a watched pregnancy test never reveals its secrets before its five minutes are up,” she said dryly.

“I’m just so anxious to know,” he mumbled.

“For argument’s sake, let’s say that I am,” she said.  “We’ll still have another seven to eight months of waiting to do before it’s born; how will you handle that if you can’t sit still for five little minutes?”

“I’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” he replied smartly.

“We’ve come to it now,” she said, folding her arms.  “It’ll do you good to learn a little patience.”

Oliver sighed and drummed his fingers loudly on the table.  “Can I do this while we wait?” he asked, and spun the test wand with his thumb and forefinger.

Chloe gasped.   “Oliver!”

He grinned and spun it again, laughing as it whizzed round and round and Chloe vainly tried to smack his hand away.

“Stop it!” she chided.  “Honestly, why should we have a kid when I have my own juvenile here?”

“You make me feel young again,” he joked, reaching forward and catching her by surprise with a quick tickle. Chloe squealed and he leaned forward and kissed her across the table, smiling as he claimed her lips.

Then the egg timer pinged, startling them both out of their easy embrace.

Both of them turned to stare at the innocent-looking test wand still lying face down in the centre of the table, now ready for viewing.

“Do you wanna do the honours?” Chloe offered quietly.

Oliver gulped and slowly reached for the wand, then paused. Now that the moment was actually here, he was suddenly hit with a barrage of feelings and thoughts.

Ever since he’d come home and whispered his readiness to start a family in his wife’s ear, he’d wanted nothing more than to receive positive confirmation that they were going to be parents.  He still wanted that, very much, they both did; however, they had had to endure a few false alarms the previous months, and their hearts broke a little each time they learned they hadn’t been successful.

“Sometimes it takes a woman’s body a while to return to normal after coming off contraception,” Lola had explained when they’d shown up in her office after their second unsuccessful attempt.  “Don’t expect to conceive right off the bat.  It’ll happen when it’s time for it to happen, but you’ll both have to be patient.”

She’d made complete sense, and Oliver had bravely reassured his wife that they would keep trying; but the possibility of yet another disappointment had him feeling very bereft.

Chloe reached for the wand, breaking Oliver’s train of thought.  Slowly she lifted the wand and held it up in front of his face, so that he could read the results, but she couldn’t.

“Here,” she said, her voice unsteady.  “What does it say?”

Oliver stared at the information in the tiny window, and swallowed.

“Well?” she prompted.

Finally he looked up at his wife and smiled.

“Congratulations, honey,” he said thickly, reaching for her hands.  “We’re pregnant.”

Present Day

Oliver showered and shaved in under thirty minutes.

“How are you doing, honey?” he asked as he finished dressing.

“Four minutes apart, as predicted.”

“Right.”  He took a deep breath.  “Chloe, I know you said you still have time, three minutes and all, but…honey, I’m concerned that things might progress faster than we think.  I’d feel a lot more confident if we left for the hospital now.”

“I think the baby agrees with you,” she said carefully.

He frowned.  “Really?  Why?”

She gave him a wry smile.  “My water just broke.”

Oliver blanched.  “Oh, Jesus!”

“Honey… patience, not panic, remember?” she reminded him calmly.

“Patience, not panic,” he repeated, calming himself down with deep breaths.  “Okay, I can do this.  We can do this.”

“Course we will.  Owww…here’s another one.  Hold my hand…”

After the contraction had eased, Oliver carefully helped her to her feet, then picked up her bag and slung it over one shoulder.   “Shall I carry you?”

“No, I can still walk,” she replied, and smiled up at him.  “Come on.  Let’s go have our baby.”
