Chapter 2
The girls splashed about happily in their bubble bath. Chloe took charge of Sloane while Oliver managed with Skye, who was delightfully wriggly.
He watched with a lump in his throat as Chloe washed Sloane’s hair. She took special care, gently tilting the child’s head back as she worked the conditioning shampoo through the dark curls.
How could she possibly believe that she didn’t want this for herself? He could see the longing in her eyes for an addition to their family, a yearning that she was she was seriously struggling to ignore.
“Make sure you keep the shampoo out of her eyes,” Chloe advised.
He gave her a sly grin. “Hey, I know what to do. I washed your hair, remember?”
She blushed and smiled. “Yes, but I wasn’t wriggling like an eel at the time,” she pointed out, leaning back to avoid a large splash from Skye.
Oliver wasn’t so lucky. “Good point,” he agreed, staring down at the large bubbles now adorning his shirt. Skye giggled and sloshed him again, getting more lather on his face and hair.
Chloe laughed and shook her head. “Okay, hand her over. You take Sloane.”

An hour later, after a bath and a bedtime story, they kissed the girls goodnight and made their way back down the hall.
“What a day, huh?” Chloe said, smiling up at him. “Tiring… but a lot of fun.”
He nodded. “Agreed. Sloane’s taken a real shine to you; she never left your side the whole time.”
Chloe smiled. “She’s definitely the quieter of the two, but don’t be fooled; she’s very observant, taking everything in and learning as she goes along.” She paused, a wistful expression on her face. “She reminds me a lot of myself when I was a child.”
Oliver took a deep breath. “Can you imagine having that kind of fun every day, in our own home?”
Chloe frowned. “I know the girls are a handful, but I don’t think Joel and Molly will hand them over to us indefinitely-”
“You know what I mean, Chloe.”
She stiffened. “This again?”
“I know we’ve skirted the issue a number of times, but we’ve never really had a serious discussion about starting a family.”
“That’s because you already know how I feel about this, Oliver.”
“I know that feelings can change,” he said earnestly. “You and I are a prime example of that, having had feelings for other people for years before eventually falling for each other.”
She softened, a smile briefly flitting across her face. “That’s true… but it doesn’t mean I’ve changed my stance on everything.”
“I’m only talking about this one thing,” he replied quickly. This was the first time in their marriage that he’d gotten her to respond to more than two sentences on the subject of children, and he was determined to keep her talking for as long as possible.
He took her hands and faced her. “Just… close your eyes for a second and picture it, if you will. A family portrait: you, me, and a beautiful son or daughter with a chin dimple and blonde hair. Isn’t it beautiful?”
He saw a smile beginning to form at the corner of her lips, and felt encouraged. “It is, isn’t it?” he went on. “Can you imagine us as parents?”
Her eyes flicked open. “Nope.”
He sighed in exasperation. “Chloe, you love kids, you’re so good with them!”
“Only because I get to hand them back to their parents at the end of the day,” she replied diffidently.
“But you had fun today, you said so yourself!” he argued.
She shrugged. “Hey, I didn’t say it was that much fun.”
He took a deep breath and forced himself to remain calm. “Will you at least think about it?”
“Not today.” She let go of his hands and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Not until I’ve fully perused Molly’s extensive DVD collection. So - what are we watching? I’m thinking Statham, Ryan Reynolds… anything with some hard action.”
She disappeared down the corridor towards the den. There it was; that deflection again, he thought with a touch of irritation. Well, he wasn’t going to be put off so easily.
He followed her into the den and watched as she browsed through the DVDs on the shelf, making a shortlist of all the action movies present.
“One of the Die Hard films, or something from the Fast and Furious tank?” she asked, holding up two discs for his approval.
“You know what? You choose,” he offered. “I need to use the bathroom, anyway. Won’t be long…”
“Okay.” She returned to sorting the DVDs, and he walked back down the hall towards the bathroom. As soon as he was inside, he locked the door and lifted her pilfered cell phone out of his pocket.
He knew her password; she’d never told him, and he’d never asked, but he’d been around her enough times to figure it out. Quickly he unlocked the screen and scrolled through her calendar until he got to the entry he was looking for.
He whistled softly. Her foolproof contraceptive was due to run out in two weeks; fortunately she didn’t seem to have an appointment scheduled for a replacement. Which was just as well; waiting for two weeks would be bad enough, but having to wait another three years would be absolute torture.
He stared hard at the data on the screen, tapping his finger on it thoughtfully. Chloe would kill him if she knew what he was about to do. She’d been very vocal about her reluctance to have children, and the reasons behind her decision, which was why she’d done everything possible to prevent that from happening.
But that was before she’d met him. And he also remembered her saying that if she happened to fall pregnant, she’d keep the baby with no hesitation. That fact, coupled with the poignant look of longing on her face when she’d bathed the twins and put them to bed, gave Oliver Queen the final nudge to put his plan into action.
He took a deep breath and pressed the delete button, and the reminder disappeared from the screen.

“Hey,” she greeted as he returned to the living room. “Okay, I’ve narrowed it down to these three…”
He put on an interested face as she prattled on, and stealthily dropped her cell phone back in her bag before continuing his slow walk towards her.
“…so what do you think? What are we watching?” she asked as he got close.
Oliver rested his hands on her waist, spun her round, and gathered her into his arms in one fluid move. “What do you say we skip the movie?” he whispered lightly into her ear.
“Oliver!” she squealed, and he chuckled. “It’s movie night, remember?”
“I remember you saying wanted some hard action.” He rested his hands on her bottom and ground his hips against her, and her pupils dilated with desire and need. “I have all the hard action you need right here.”
“Mr Queen, you have swayed me with your inimitable logic,” she whispered breathlessly. Her hand snaked down between them and closed around the bulge in his pants. “Among other things, of course.”
