Chapter 5

Five minutes later, they were still lying together in reverent silence.

Chloe’s rested her head on his chest and idly traced small circles on his pecs with her forefinger.  Clark stroked her hair tenderly and dropped a kiss on the top of her head, still not quite believing what had just happened between them.  Chloe’s other arm tightened around his waist and she snuggled closer to him, sighing deeply.

Had they really just had sex? he kept thinking in a daze.  He and Chloe?

After a while she lifted her head and gazed at him with a shy smile.  He returned her grin; totally stoked by the knowledge that yes, he and Chloe had just fucked.  And damn if it wasn’t the best thing that had ever happened to him.

His smile widened and he opened his mouth to say exactly that, but the silence was suddenly broken by the shrill ringing of her phone.

“Don’t answer it,” he whispered.  She nodded.

The device rang another five times, and then the answering machine activated - and a familiar whispery voice filled the air.

“Hi Chloe, it’s me,” said Lana.  “I’m looking for Clark; I thought he might be with you.”

Chloe froze and stared at him in horror.  He swallowed as Lana’s voice went on, twisting the knife further.

“I guess neither of you are there.  Listen, if you run into him, could you send him home for me?” she was saying.  “I really need to speak with him.  Thanks, talk later.  Bye.”

The machine clicked off.  Chloe stared at him for several more seconds before bolting out of bed like a skittish horse.

“Chloe-”

“Oh God.”  She made a beeline for her robe and yanked it back on, keeping her back to him as she belted it with trembling fingers.

“We should talk about this-”

“Oh, God,” she moaned, pacing wildly and clutching her head in dismay.

“Chloe, there’s no need to be upset,” he went on.  She stopped pacing and stared at him as if he’d gone mad.

“Are you kidding me?” she said incredulously.  “I just betrayed my best friend - with my other best friend!  And you-!” she pointed a shaky finger at him.  “You just cheated on your girlfriend!  And you don’t feel the slightest bit guilty about all this?!”

“After what she did to me with Bizarro, why should I?” he shot back. He saw the blood drain from her face, and realised that that had come out completely wrong.

“I didn’t mean-”

“So, you used me to get back at Lana for sleeping with your evil twin,” she whispered hollowly.  “I should have known.”

Clark immediately and emphatically shook his head.  “No, Chloe, it wasn’t like that!”

“That’s exactly how it was!” she yelled, and turned away from him.  “God, how could I be so stupid…”

He came up behind her and took her hand.  “Chloe, please-”

“Don’t touch me!” she screamed, jerking her arm out of his grasp.  “How could you use me like that?”

“I didn’t exactly plan it, it just…sort of happened!”

“Oh, no,” she said with a bitter laugh, shaking her head.  “You and I have never ‘just sort of happened,’ Clark, because you’ve never thought of me that way.  So you’re either ‘A’: a callous bastard who decided to fuck me because you’re pissed at the love of your life for fucking another man…or ‘B’: you weren’t yourself.”  She paused, and her eyes narrowed into tiny slits.  “You’re on RedK again, aren’t you?”

“What?” he gasped.  “No, of course not!”

She ignored him and went to search his clothes.  “Where did you hide it, Clark?  Huh?  Which pocket is it in?”

“I am not on RedK, I haven’t been anywhere near it for years!” he bellowed, yanking his jacket out of her hands.

“Then you must have ingested it somehow, at the bar,” she said, thinking hard.  “Something in your beer, maybe…”

“I didn’t have a drop to drink at that club, and neither did you,” he said darkly, tossing the jacket down on the bed.  “What is wrong with you, Chloe?  Why can’t you just accept the simple truth: that we’re attracted to each other, and had sex?”

She stared at him, her eyes filled with pain.  “Because you’ve never, ever been attracted to me, Clark,” she said sadly.  “I should know; I’ve been your Lana sounding-board for eight years.  You may be upset with her now because of what happened with Bizarro, but I know she’s the one you love.  So let’s just draw a line under this huge, huge mistake and get on with our lives, okay?”

He shook his head.  “No, this wasn’t a mistake, Chloe - you are not a mistake,” he said, standing in front of her and squeezing her shoulders gently.

“I’m your friend, Clark.  Lana’s your girlfriend,” she said dully.  “That makes me the outsider in this little triangle, and therefore the mistake.”

He gritted his teeth in frustration and managed to stop himself from shaking her.  “We’re not a mistake,” he repeated softly, tilting her head up with a gentle finger under her chin.  “How can I prove it to you?”

A solitary tear rolled down her cheek, and she sighed and wiped it away.  “You can’t.”

He shook his head again, determined not to take no for an answer.  “Chloe-”

Just then her cell rang.

“Don’t answer-”

“Hello?” she screeched, snatching the handset and responding immediately.

“Chloe, what the hell happened to you tonight?” raged Detective Russell’s now familiar voice.

“Marty?” she said, a guilty flush creeping up her cheeks.

“You were supposed to be my eyes and ears in there, and what do you do?”

“I’m sorry, I had a - a family emergency,” she lied.

“Stop bullshitting me, Sullivan,” he replied, annoyed.  “Either you’re on board with this gig, or I’ll get someone who’s hungrier for the story to step up to the plate.”

“Okay, I’m sorry,” she said meekly.  “I screwed up, big time.  I’m so sorry.”

“Well, lucky for you that the drop-off was postponed till tomorrow,” he said darkly.  “I spoke to your buddy Clark; he’s back on for tomorrow night.  I assume you are, too.”

“Yes…yes, of course I am,” she said quickly.   “What do we need to do?”

Clark busied himself with locating his clothes and putting them on while she jotted down details for tomorrow’s undercover operation.  By the time she hung up the phone, he was fully dressed sans his jacket and waiting for her interrogation.

“What did I miss?” she asked curtly with folded arms.

“Fat Tony’s convinced the stock was compromised, and has sent a sample to his lab geeks to test it,” he replied.

She gasped.  “And you were going to tell me this, when?”

“That’s what I came over to tell you, but we-”

“I know what we did,” she snapped.  “Do you have a leather jacket for tomorrow?”

He blinked.  “Huh?”

“As nice as your current suit is, if you wear it twice in a row, people are gonna notice,” she pointed out.

He nodded.  “Right.  Er…sure; yeah, I’ve got one.”

“Good.  I’ll be working late tomorrow, so it’s probably best if I catch up with you when I’m done.”

That sounded reasonable.  “Okay,” he said.  “What time?”

She thought briefly.  “Nineish?”

He nodded.  “See you at Paradisiac at nine o’clock.”

His cell buzzed insistently, and Chloe stiffened.

“That’ll be your girlfriend, Clark,” she said pointedly.  “She’s expecting you at home.”

He rejected the call and put it in his pocket, then took a deep breath.  “Chloe, I-”

This time it was her cell rang shrilly, and much to his chagrin she answered it immediately.

“Lana, hi!” she greeted.  “…No, Clark’s not here, but I did run into him a while ago and he said he was on his way back to the farm,” she lied, causing his scowl to deepen.  “Okay…yeah, will do.  Bye.”

“You did that on purpose,” he accused as soon as she hung up.

She raised a quizzical brow.  “What was I supposed to do; hang up on her?” she replied.  “It’s bad enough that I’m lying to her!”

“We need to talk about what just happened between us, Chloe!” he insisted, but she shook her head.

“There’s nothing to talk about,” she said shortly.  “Go back to your girlfriend, Clark; she’s waiting for you.  Besides, we have a big job to do tomorrow, and I have to make sure I don’t drop the ball this time.”

Clark shut his eyes and gritted his teeth.  There was no getting through to her when she was in this mood.

“Fine,” he growled, picking up his jacket and shrugging into it.  “But this isn’t over; not by a long shot.”

“Yeah, whatever you say.”  She stalked off to the bathroom and slammed the door behind her.

Clark sighed in frustration.  He wasn’t surprised that Chloe was upset.  It was true that he’d shied away from showing her romantic attention over the years, but that was because she was his friend, and he had too much to lose by shaking up the status quo.  Feuding friends often got back together and were stronger for any disagreements shared.  Broken relationships, however, never healed that easily.  And if there was one person he always wanted in his corner, it was Chloe.

So why was he with Lana again?

The questions startled him a little, and he frowned.  Before tonight, he’d thought it was a given that he loved her; now he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that that wasn’t the case.  Yes, sex with Chloe had been mind-blowing, but that in and of itself was merely an indicator that he was dating the wrong girl.  The quality of his relationship with Chloe had always surpassed the one he had with Lana, hands down.  Whatever he’d felt for Lana, it hadn’t been love.  Now that he’d accepted that fact, there was nothing holding him back.

His cell buzzed again, and he rolled his eyes in irritation and turned the damned thing off.  Lana would get what she wanted; he’d go to her.  But this was the last time he’d ever respond to her summons.  Everything was going to change from now on.

With a smile, he locked Chloe’s apartment door carefully behind him and whooshed down the stairs and out of the building.
