Nothing like warm chunky milk running down my arms, between my breasts, and splashing on to my pants.   Wednesday we went through five outfits each, today we're only on number two so that's not bad, right?  I think I do more trips to the washing machine than trips to the bathroom these days ( Read more... )

I guess it depends if you are doing a pocket diaper, fitted diaper, or an all-in-one. I like the fuzzi bunz (pocket & AIO) because even though it's an AIO, it's trim. The microfiber insert comes out of the pocket to make washing and drying quick and easy, and you can add extra stuffing into the pocket for nighttime. It has elastic around the leg openings, PUL on the outside so it's waterproof, soft fleece on the inside (very important because it keeps baby feeling dry even when she's wet).

Some of the fitted diapers I had when Charlotte was a newborn were good because they had an umbilical snap down to avoid the cord stump. A fitted diaper with a soaker/liner that either snaps in or just lays in is good because you get the extra absorbency but because the layers are separate they wash better and dry quicker.

Prefolds and covers are a good choice too, because prefolds are cheap, you can buy cute covers or use wool pants/covers, they wash and dry easily, and they last a long time.

I'm not crazy about hook & loop/velcro. Once the waist starts to get small on baby, some of the rough parts of the velcro can rub against baby's skin, and the sound of ripping velcro scares Charlotte *still*.

Fitted legs, adjustable waist (either snaps or elastic on part of the waist like a Kissaluv), fleece or sherpa inside, umbilical snap down for the newborn stage, and not too bulky - that's what I would say is pretty important.

Hope that helps!

Thanks sooo much! I'm going to try making a fleece lined AIO Pocket diaper. The only thing I'm still not sure of is how to do the back pocket opening. Is there elastic on the waterproof layer, fleece layer or both? Hope Charlotte goes down a little easier for you tonight and you get a good rest.

There is elastic on the PUL layer at the back, but not on the fleece. Let me know if you want me to send some detailed pictures or measurements.
