My mom arrived a few days before I arrived home for Christmas and spent most of her time in my kitchen with the girls, baking and cooking up a storm. I don't know who enjoyed it more; my mom, the girls, or Jack (since he gets to eat all kinds of treats!).
I attended a birth on Saturday (the 22nd) and as soon as I finished there I had a shower, threw all of my dirty clothes into my suitcase and left for home. Jack worked for the first 3 days that I was home so I didn't see him much until Christmas Day.
On the 23rd, my mom, the girls and I baked gingerbread cookies and then decorated them that night when Jack got home from work. We had a good time decorating the cookies, made a big sticky mess, and put some out for Santa on Christmas Eve.
For Christmas Eve, Jack ended up having to work until about 7 o'clock at night. Kim brought my FIL down to our house for supper and the girls watched The Polar Express with him while my mom and I finished putting together a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. We set the table with my Grandma's linen tablecloth, my fine china, and sparkly candles. I always remember a line from the tv show Little House on the Prairie when 'Ma' said that fine china was not for special occasions, but for special people. True dat.
Jack arrived home on Christmas Eve just as we finished eating supper so we waited until he was finished his meal before we had dessert. We did the traditional Christmas Eve pj's, cookies & milk for Santa, stockings etc, and then shuffled the girls off to bed.
The girls woke us up before 7 a.m. (and were up off and on since about 4 a.m. according to my mom) but we lingered in bed until about 7:30 before we finally got up to let the girls open their stockings. Jack tried to convince me that we wait another two hours and celebrate Christmas on "BC time" in honour of my mom's visit but no one would go along with that!
Christmas day was great - the girls were happy with their gifts, we ate leftovers, had a nap, and had a nice relaxing day.
And now, it's back to work!
