I had so many thoughts buzzing around in my mind that I had trouble falling asleep last night. I finished one Harry Potter book and started another before I finally crashed around 2 a.m. I was awake at 8 but couldn't go back to sleep. The lack of sleep, constant buzz of anxiety and homesickness weighed heavily on me this morning and it felt nearly impossible to get moving. I didn't shower, eat, or even take a sip of water before 10 a.m.
Some comforting and encouraging words from Dina gave me the push I needed and I was soon fed, watered, showered and headed down the hill to Queen Street. When I was just a few houses down the hill a Canada Post truck passed me and stopped in front of the house so I turned around and sure enough, the heavy parcel I'd shipped to myself had arrived! I lugged it to my room and left....again.
I think I'm catching on to the bus/streetcar business here. I can take the same streetcar from here to downtown but due to the rail construction it detours it's usual route and takes a little longer. I walked through campus again and browsed the campus bookstore, lingering far too long in front of the selection of pens (right, D!?) and faked interest in the Ryerson t-shirts so that I could stand in front of a big-ass fan they had blowing in there ;-) It was very cool to see the 'midwifery' section of books and I looked at them all before making my own big purchase: a 3-hole punch that will fit in my binder. Woo-hoo!
I went back to the library to try again to get a student 'One' card but realized that I'd left my student number at the house. D'oh! A student who was directing newbies for One cards asked me, "Are you a graduate student, or....?" Or am I just old? LOL
Another $4 mini lunch at Tim's while I read a little bit, then back out into the heat. The campus was just as busy as before with volunteers handing out flyers, condoms and mints, and one vendor had people posing for pictures with life-size cardboard cutouts of Sheldon, Barney, and Zak G from the Hangover (in his underwear). Um....pass.
I hopped on the streetcar and when it dropped me off at my corner, I took Dina's suggestion and I walked two blocks further south to walk on the beach. It was hot and humid (a bit like living inside a dog's mouth, right Dina?) but I stood in the water and let the waves splash over my feet for a while, walked along the wooden boardwalk until the sand dried on my feet and then found a bench in the shade.
I took pictures of some of the beautiful homes as I trudged upthedamnhill back to the house (ohmy that hill will whip my gastrocnemius into shape in no time!). A cold shower, a cold drink on the shaded porch and I'm feeling much better. I still have work to do on my Sociology (which is officially 'late' now) but I'll do it tonight.
Tomorrow it is expected to be even hotter than today (will feel like 38 with the humidity) so I'm going to study and rest, walk while it's still cool in the morning, and unpack my box of stuff. And I need to review ESW, NRP and FHS before Wednesday too, so plenty to keep my mind occupied on this long weekend.
Now, to read more about sex selection for Sociology.
