all is well

While we were at the grocery store this afternoon, one of the cashiers (who is a FaceBook friend of mine) came to tell us that a woman she knows had spotted Sandy today!  The woman that spotted Sandy was still in the store so I talked to her.  She had tried to give Sandy some food and catch her but Sandy was too scared and wouldn't let them get near her.  I gave the woman my cell number and we raced home, dumped our groceries in the kitchen and headed out on the highway to where she was last spotted.

As we were leaving town, the same woman called me and said, "We've got your puppy!"  They had pulled over on the side of the road and Sandy wasn't far away but they couldn't catch her.  Julia and I both got out of the van and walked towards her, calling her, but she turned and ran the other way.  She was so scared, poor thing.  Julia and I ran down the gravel road after her, calling her but she kept going for about half a mile.  I eventually pooped out - running in my crocks down a muddy road - yeesh.  A friend of mine had followed us out there and one of the kids that was with her, ran after Julia.

After driving through a stubbly, muddy field Sandy eventually stopped and sloooooowly approached Julia.  I ran over to join them and Sandy whined and growled (her happy noise) as I held her - I'm sure she was so scared and relieved and exhausted.  As soon as we got home, she drank some water and crashed.  Our cat snuggled up with Sandy right away and stayed with her for an hour or so.  I think she was happy that Sandy was back too!  Sandy seems stiff and sore - I can imagine how much distance she covered on her stubby little legs!  I'm just amazed that she survived the night!  Coyotes, cold temperature, no shelter, no food, close to the highway.....it's a miracle that she made it through the night.

I'm relieved and happy that she's home but my fears from last night were true - she was scared and cold, hungry, lost, and probably wondering where we were or why we left her.

I'm so happy that she's home.  And all because I posted on FaceBook and someone who knows someone told someone I knew that they'd spotted a stray dog!

HOME!!!
