Today, the Supreme Court held up the Federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban set forth by the President. They declared the ban to be constitutional, and it is now illegal to recieve or perform a second trimester abortion, despite studies showing that the fetus has no congitive abilities or feelings until the third trimester. The ban has technically been in place for several years, but injunctions have been in place while the Supreme Court debated the constitutionality.
So after four and a half months of pregnancy, my uterus ceases to be my property. I, as a woman, lose the rights to my body. It's my body, it should be my choice. And if they've gone this far, what's stopping more legislation?
When did we, as a nation, stop trusting women to make the "right decision" on their own? We're a world power yet we're stilling making sure that "the weaker sex" is submissive to the ideals that, quite frankly, rich white men decided on.
My body. My choice. Not yours.
I really hate this country at times like this. Proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free? Freedom isn't picking between DVDs; it's being able to make decisions for myself. Especially when the decisions are about my own body.
