I met Isaiah a few years ago when I tagged along with our columnist (one of the first female NBA columnists!). I can't remember the year, but I think he was doing NBC halftime commentary & still dreaming about a world with the CBA. He seemed nice, but that smile couldn't hide his fakeness. Our columnist introduced him as her good friend Isaiah; he mentioned that they went way back. Later on, she said he's the type to smile to your face as he stabs you in the back, as she learned the hard way. Ouch! Since then, I've passive-aggressively wished him ill will.

Heh, I met Bill Laimbeer on my 26th b-day, when Best Friend & I went home to Sacramento. She took me out to our fave pub & there he was, kinda drunk & rambling. (The Shock were in town playing the Monarchs.) Dude, I knew he was tall but I had no idea that he literally a giant! We caught a ride with him & his assistant in a VW bus, then saw Cheryl Ford (Malone's daughter) leaving to catch a flight. (Her grandma had just died.) I was a little surprised that she was pretty, considering where half her genes came from ;)

OMG, I'm rambling and I'm not even drunk! Must be time for dinner :)

Thomas does have an incredibly fake smile... he also has the kind of eyes that don't actually make contact; they seem to slide off after a moment or so...

Laimbeer is HUGE! He and IT were two of the dirtiest players in the NBA during their time... actually, you don't realize how immense some of the guys are until you're standing next to them.

A few years ago, my friend sliced her thumb in a bagel incident and we went to the ER in Norwalk, CT. While we were there, who should limp in but John Starks?! That was the season he was having all the knee problems. He was quite pleasant (painkillers probably helped) and though I never really thought of him as big... he is. I also met Bernard King and actually got to sit on his shoulders. The air is quite thin up there. Heh... he's a nice guy.

I need more coffee...

I've stood next to a good number of NBA players, but Laimbeer's got to be the physically-biggest athlete I've ever met. Like, Vlade Divac's bulk didn't freak me out much, but with Laimbeer, I had to bite my lip to not scream, "OMG, the statues on Easter Island are alive!"

Heh, John Starks at the ER with a playing injury? ;) Poor guy; he seems like he's loyal to whichever team paid him, unlike a few of the newer jerks.

I'm 5'6" in boots, but even Bonds seemed like a giant (heh, no pun intended) when we almost literally ran into him. My eyes were level with the Giants logo on his jersey. OTOH, my once-beloved Jason Williams isn't that intimidating at 6'5" ;)

If memory serves me, that was during the time when Starks sans injuries was uncommon! The season before that, he broke his nose for the second time. (!)

Yeah, Starks seems to be a good guy; the one issue I had with him wasn't so much with him as with Riley. Starks was a streak shooter, but Riley refused to put him on the bench even when the poor guy couldn't make a basket to save his life. Also, he used to let Reggie Miller fuck with his head and it ruined his concentration...

I still think there was more to that Jason Williams incident than we ever found out about. Anyone as generous and decent as he always seemed to be, once they got him away from Derrick Coleman (ugh) couldn't have done what they were originally charging him with...
