Heh, the Anaheim/L.A./whatever Angels beat the Devil Rays on 6/6/06.
An old, long-overdue meme gakked from
aivilo_18...
Music that has followed me from high school: I know that a lot of us took ourselves oh-so-seriously in high school, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we were listening to crap back then. Or that we can't still enjoy the crap we listened to then now. So, if you're in a meme-ish mood, list the five albums that you were listening to/came out when you were in high school that still pop into you CD player (or come up on your iPod) every now and again.
And bcause five is not enough, it came out to 12 songs from 9 (10) albums.
Picking songs from albums released between 1990 and 1994 was harder than I thought it would be. Missing from the list are R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Madonna, U2, Beck, Metallica and the Beastie Boys. I saved the goth/mod stuff for next week. I might do a college edition after that.
Alice in Chains, "Would" -- from "Dirt" and "Singles" OST (both 1992)
Poor Lane Staley. Such a sad, twisted song... so, of course, I love it, especially the bass line.
Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg, "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang" -- from "The Chronic" (1992)
The song that made Dre more than "that other guy from N.W.A." and introduced Snoop & his unique way of turning a phrase. A classic, even if you don't like rap. This song reminds me of summer backyard parties and AP senior English.
Primus, "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver"Primus featuring Tom Waits, "Tommy the Cat" -- both from "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" (1991)
Primus sucks! (But not after 2003.) Les Claypool is a crazy mofo, but damn, can he play bass. Reminds me of my childhood guy friend (he was the Han to my Leia), who kept saying, "You gotta hear this one song! It's so weird, it's awesome!" Aw, I miss Theo.
Pearl Jam, "Black" -- from "Ten" (1991)
Nirvana, "Lithium" -- from "Nevermind" (1991)
The two albums that defined the grunge era, as well as my junior & senior years of high school. Hey, at least I didn't pick "Jeremy" and "Come As You Are" ;)
"Black" is a universally loved, hold-up-your-lighter-at-a-concert song. "Lithium" is best known as Kurt's cry for help. (Poor guy.) Gah, I remember when Kurt's body was found, and how even my mom was shocked at the news ("Didn't his wife just give birth?"). It's been 12 years and wow, now I feel really old.
White Zombie, "Thunder Kiss '65" -- from "La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1" (1992)
Despite his creepy/growly singing voice, Rob Zombie has a pleasant speaking voice. He's also got a nice, modest home. (We saw it on the
Dearly Departed Tour.) Probably White Zombie's best-known song, instantly recognizable by the opening chords.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Give It Away" -- from "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" (1992)
Another song known by its opening chords. I'd never realized how dirty the lyrics were until a friend corrected them for his mom. Nope, it wasn't awkward to hear a guy say, "No, mom, he's singing, 'What I got you got to get it put it in you'."
Guns N' Roses, "Don't Cry (Original version)"Guns N' Roses, "November Rain" -- both from "Use Your Illusion I" (1991)
Reminds me of Nick, a sweet, shy, outcast-like hot boy (dark hair, blue eyes) from piano class. He'd play songs from both "Use Your Illusions," and when the teacher left the room, everyone would stop to listen to him. Nick liked playing "November Rain," though I preferred "Don't Cry." It's such a beautiful song, and the
lyrics are sweet and full of UST.
Smashing Pumpkins, "Today"Smashing Pumpkins, "Soma" -- both from "Siamese Dream" (1993)
Ah, the album that spoke to high school-me: the perfect mix of angst, not-quite-emo lyrics, and lots of guitar (no, seriously, mulit-layer guitar tracks). I love every song on this album, and it was tough picking "Today" over "Geek U.S.A." and "Mayonaise." I went to one Lollapalooza -- in 1994, which Nirvana was supposed to headline -- with Lindsay, my high school best friend. OMG, seeing Smashing Pumpkins was a near-religious experience. We were singing & hugging & crying & trying not to ruin our L7 autographs... and well, we were also kind of high. She said the cigarettes were eucalyptus & cloves; I said they smelled like weed. I think we were both right ;)
That free stuff!/meme post wore me out. Time to get ready for work. I think I've got Top Model today, so yay, because I kinda miss Tyra & her fivehead.
