Sigh; free stuff!; sigh again

Before I get all nostalgic & weepy... did any UPN affliates outside of L.A. air tonight's VMars at 1 this morning? I thought Buster 2 was lying, but he changed channels to record "I Am God," and dude, it was really on. Papa Mars has a cute name-drop/shoutout in the cold open. (Man, I was hoping he'd say "Jared" instead.) And OMG, Dick has the best semi-dirty line ever! Also, I'm a little in love with Beaver Casablancas, now that he's sullen.

So... Best Friend is now safely in Virginia. (Long story short: her husband got a job with USA Today; they had to move to Virginia; she not-so-jokingly asked him how long he could live out there by himself.) We'd both been good about not crying. For me, it was a matter of processing the fact that my best friend of eight years was moving 2,738 miles away. It didn't sink in until we said good-bye yesterday afternoon, that, as Bart Simpson once said to Milhouse, "You mean I'll have to get on a plane to visit you?" (Dude, that episode was on this weekend, too. Bastards.) We started crying as soon as we hugged.

I'll never be able to tell her how much I love her, how much of an impact she's had on my life. Luckily, she already knows. That's what makes her more than someone I've known for eight years and more like my sister. She loves me & understands me. She picks me up, dusts me off, and kicks my ass when necessary. She calls me during an emergency because she knows I'll always be there. She's the yang to my yin, the Betty to my Veronica, the Buffy to my Faith (minus the do-goodery & evil). Life will suck without her, but hopefully I'll see her in July :)

Best Friend & I have had a lot of crazy, adventurous, heartbreaking times together, but it's the "smal" moments I'll miss the most.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, "American Girl"
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, "Free Fallin'" -- The former used to be our favorite Tom Petty song. (Thanks, Silence of the Lambs!). The latter is now our Petty song. Reminds me of making margaritas & watching baseball & beers at O'Connell's.

Tears For Fears, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" -- We always say this whenever we hear this song: "Aw, I love this song! Man, I miss The Dennis Miller Show." Both statements are still true.

Nine Inch Nails, "Closer" -- Our first trip to Dodger Stadium and we're stuck in traffic, lining up to get in the parking lot. Everyone one around us is blasting the pre-game show "(Shawn Green blah blah blah.") We chose to blast NIN and shout "Beat L.A.!" at anyone who complained. BF stopped feeling guilty after our Giants whipped Eric Gagne's ass in the 9th.

Coldplay, "Yellow"
Coldplay, "The Scientist" -- Our favorite Coldplay songs. Time and conversation stop when we hear them. When we saw Coldplay last year, we dared each other to not cry when they played our songs. Heh, like that was gonna work.

Sia, "Breathe Me" -- Six Feet Under was our show (we're weird like that), and after the series finale, "Breathe Me" became one of our unofficial songs. Such a sad song, but it makes me think of [NON-SPOILERY FOR THE FINALE] new chapters in life. Crap, I can't really explain it further without being spoilery so I'll stop now.

Johnny Cash, "Folsom Prison Blues" -- BF is from Folsom. During our first night of post-work drinks, I asked, "Can you really hear the Folsom County prison bell all over town?" Her answer: "Yep. It's kind of a signal for all the schoolkids to get indoors. Much more effective than a teacher's whistle." That's when I knew we'd be good friends :)

Blondie, "One Way or Another" -- This was our karaoke song long before Veronica Mars stepped up to the mic. We were going to sing "Like a Virgin," but there were a lot of creepy older guys at that bar.

Time to get ready for work & steel myself for a day with Invasion. Dude, it was Invasion or Sons & Daughters. I'd rather caption mediocre aliens than the third-rate Arrested Development clone.

free stuff!, vmars, music, sigh
