Pin-up Dominatrix Chic - Modesty and Sexuality Intertwine to Pique Excitement
Asphyxia Presents BLUSH & ALABASTER at |FAT| 2013 Arts & Fashion Week
Edgy Innovator Asphyxia is back for |FAT| 2013 with a lustful exploration of the power of fashion and sexual politics.
Her new collection BLUSH & ALABASTER, inspired by Marie Antoinette and her Milliner-Dressmaker, Marie-Jeanne Rose Bertin, raises a tip-of-the-hat to floriography while exploiting the irresistible contrast of paleness with intensifying colours, piquing intrigue like flesh blossoming with desire.
Illuminated in tones ranging from finest ivory, cream and gold, through peach, pink and even pale blues, plum, crimson and black, the collection comprises gowns cut from luxuriant fabrics paired with salvaged items, age-old lace, beadwork and elaborate flourishes of live flowers.
BLUSH & ALABASTER is a dramatic tribute to intense modesty and heightened sexuality, always at extremes but so intertwined - the translucent grace of alabaster flushed and brought to life by the excitement of coursing blood.
The collection delivers Asphyxia’s trademark of gloriously coexisting extremes that pack a dramatic punch, in gowns that embody edgy modern attitude but reference classic lines and materials, always in seductive new ways.
The garments themselves will be desire-drenched spectacles and Asphyxia’s talent for performance-art staging will ensure that the runway erupts with excitement. You won’t want to miss it.
About Asphyxia
Asphyxia (www.asphyxiadesigns.com) is Alexandra De Francesco, a fashion designer and textile artist. A graduate of OCAD, De Francesco creates spectacular wearable art couture, which more recently also incorporates her flair for floral design. Asphyxia’s work has been called “bad-ass femininity,” “dark and daring,” “pin-up dominatrix chic,” and “bordello in hell.” Her most recent collection, BLOOM, was presented at |FAT| 2012. Fajo Magazine tweeted “Punk, goth, power … dress being cut live onstage!” Style Empire called the collection “edgy and modern attitude… designs offset by the classic lines and materials that are very reminiscent of a 1920′s flapper,” and said “while everybody left the show alive it’s safe to say that Alexandra De Francesco’s collection entitled Bloom took our breath away…” Asphyxia has exhibited at the Textile Museum of Canada, The Gladstone Hotel, Gallery X, and has been a featured designer in Darkvanity and OCAD's Tour De Force, among other shows. Asphyxia has presented collections yearly at |FAT| since 2008. Regular attendees know her not just for her fashion, but also for her magnificent and heart-stopping performance art finales.
