Well, I am taking a photography class. Yep. Just at the Y and its only a three week quick runthrough on composition... I probably don't really NEED to take the course, but like my friend Karla said, I might just pick up on something I didn't know. The good side: There are only 3 other women in the class and it is taught by a young woman. So, I might get more out of it than expected.
This week, our assignment is to read our manual. Yeah, I've read the manual a gazillion bazillion times, so I skipped that (so far, I have until Tuesday). And also to take lots of pictures. Well, I didn't really do that either... until today. The third part of the assignment was to bring in 3-4 pics of your work that you consider really good and 3-4 of your work that you feel could use improvement.
I'll share that selection behind the cut!
First off, I'll throw some pictures out that I took today. I haven't really made any decisions on what to bring. I decided to go out and buy some interesting and beautiful flowers and photograph those. I have a white foamboard and a black one, so I used that primarily as my backdrop. I also decided to get my pristine 600-threadcount white sheet into the mix for more texture. I'll put the ones I think are "Good" first. Anyway, these are the ones I had printed (on 5X7 so as to not overwhelm):
and in B&W
A picture of my beauty queen Brookie, looking like a Calvin Klein ad:
And of my Jordan looking like the toughguy he is:
These are actually of my friend Ethan and were taken perhaps a year ago or so. I think I've put these here before.
And I also printed my "Profile" shot from a couple weeks ago.
Finally, this is an oldie but a goodie. A long long long time ago (read 4 years ago) I was given the privlidge (SP???) of photographing Counting Crows when they were on tour. This is my pis de ristance (SP????) from those outings. It is in the DEFINITELY taking pile... because I'm so proud of it. Taken in available lighting with a 200mm lens.
Now onto the "Not so great":
This picture is out of focus, better settings would have improved it significantly in my opinion.
This one of Ethan has a sign RIGHT THERE in the focus area. It completely throws off the feeling of the picture... which was supposed to be a romantic take on a boy in love with his guitar....
This was just a bad lighting decision. They kids' faces are all completely obscured by the poor lighting conditions.
Another bad lighting situation. Better lighting wouldn't have skewed their eyes so much.
And lastly, this photograph of Vivian which is lovely and wonderful and I love it, but I think it could have been significantly improved had I taken one step to the left. Then you might've been able to see the absolute concentration on her face when picking that apple!!
Jess, I look to you for complete honesty on this. I have this goal of awe-ing the crowd when I take my pictures in. When asked "Why are you taking this class" my bold response was "Well, I have never taken a photography class, but have always been told that I have "The EYE".
:)
