My latest obsession

My latest obsession involves reading, discussing and learning more about Nietzsche's ideas and writings.

Occasionally, I'll post some insightful, provocative, or witty quotes that I come across in my reading . . .

"Even the ideals of science can be deeply, yet completely unconciously influenced by decadence: our entire sociology is proof of that . . . It knows only the form of decay of society, and inevitably it takes its own instincts of decay for the norms of sociological judgment."
- Nietzsche from The Will to Power

"On the worst readers - The worst readers are those who proceed like plundering soldiers: they pick up a few things they can use, soil and confuse the rest, and blaspheme the whole."
- Nietzsche from Mixed Opinions and Maxims

"One has to learn to see . . . habituating the eye to repose, to patience, to letting things come to it, learning to defer judgment, to investigate and comprehend the individual case in all its aspects . . . not to react immediately to a stimulus, but to have the restraining, stock-taking instincts in one's control . . . In an attitude of hostile calm one will allow the strange, the novel of every kind to approach"
- Nietzsche from Twilight of the Idols

Dammit, if most sociologists knew what the hell they were doing, Nietzsche would be taught in most sociological theory courses in the U.S. - how can you consider Max Weber an important modern social theorist and not discuss Nietzsche?
