River's return
River had simply disappeared one night, with no indication as to where she had gone. Even Simon had no idea where she had gone - in a blind panic, he had attempted to leave to go off in search, but was talked out of it, the crew of Serenity assuring him that they'd do their best to find her. So Simon remained at the school, though he seemed much more tired, paler, more detached. Rumours flew, people speculated, but months passed, and no one ever heard from her.
Late one night, River returned.
Shuffling across the grounds like a zombie, her eyes wide, she wore a scrub-green bodysuit with various metal plates and connectors attached to it - or at least it would have been scrub-green, had it not been soaked with blood. Her hair was matted and also drenched with blood, and blood covered her face and hands.
She came to a halt in the middle of the grounds and stared at her hands, trembling, for several moments before collapsing.
((I'd put the time at shortly before midnight, so a fair amount of people would probably still be up. Seers would probably be the most likely to notice she's returned, of course, as would anyone who happened to be looking out their windows or sneaking around the grounds.
