River finished up her final assignment with a relieved sigh. "Phew. Finally finished."
Simon glanced up at the clock. "Really? You're finished early."
She stretched and stood. "Yes, I worked quickly. I'm going to town tonight."
This caught Simon's attention. "Really? What for?"
River shrugged as she made her way to a cabinet to take inventory for Simon. "I need to fix the lock on my door, and I don't have the supplies to do so. I also need to purchase a new computer mouse, and there's a poetry reading in town tonight."
Simon arched his eyebrows. "Oh, a poetry reading? Are you meeting someone?" His tone was suggestive.
"Yes, I am, and no, it's not a boy. I told you, I don't have a boyfriend. You're the only male who isn't a professor who I converse with, to my knowledge, and you're low on Tylenol and sanitary napkins."
"Oh, thanks, I'll write that down. But, you know, I may not be the brightest when it comes to... girls and stuff, but I have a big brother instinct. You like someone, don't you?"
River looked over her shoulder at her brother and grinned. "I'll never tell. I suggest changing the subject, unless you wish to be nagged about nieces and nephews again. You need a girlfriend."
Simon smiled. "I don't see that happening anytime soon, mei-mei. The only women around here are either coworkers, taken, students, related to me, uninteresting, or men." He wrinkled his nose.
"Don't discount them simply because they're men," River said. "Although I do want nieces and nephews, and I don't particularly want you dating the Latin professor."
This certainly had Simon's attention. He stared at River long and hard, wheels turning in his head. Something clicked. "River, are you--"
"Someone's knocking at the door," River said, interrupting, and a moment later, there was, indeed, knocking at the door. "I'll get it."
