I agree. Higher taxes, less spending, the same as if you had run up personal debt.
No one wants to hear that though, they will always elect someone who gives them an easy out even though they know it won't work. This kind of thinking keeps the weight-loss supplement industry going.

Plus the fact of the matter is that some of the places that need to be cut the most have grown into huge sources of federal jobs and nobody is going to cut those, ever. Once a position gets federally funded it stays forever, even if it is no longer needed, even if it works against the thing it is supposed to be helping, even if that money is desperately needed elsewhere.

Seniors both out number us and vote more than we do so the three big elephants you mentioned are not going to be dealt with in any meaningful way until they are on the verge of collapse.

Trickle down economics didn't work very well in the middle ages when it was billed as noblesse oblige or any of the other numerous times it was sold by the wealthy as a way of getting the plebeians to work their tuckus off to keep money/goods/land consolidated in the hands of a privileged few. The name changes but the con remains the same.
