I read in the
LA Times this morning that the leaders of the California legislature got zero Republican in the Senate to vote for the compromise budget that the legislative leaders hammered out with the Governor. They only needed one vote to get it to pass, and they didn't get it. I don't like the budget. It raises taxes and cuts services. I don't want to pay more taxes and I don't want serives to be cut, but is there any other option? The state is on the verge of bankruptcy. For the Republicans to vote against the budget is irresponsible and bordering on criminal. They would rather the state declare bankruptcy than raise taxes. I'll glady pay more taxes is it means state government doesn't grind to a halt, our education system is not further gutted, and drastic cuts aren't made to social services.
I called Ted Strickland's office today and asked if he was supporting the budget. The woman on the phone said he wasn't because it raised taxes. I gave her an earful and said everything short of being verbally abusive and forcing her to hang up on me. She listened patiently while I ranted. I hope she got lots of calls like that today.
If you live in Santa Barbara, please call Strickland and give him a piece of your mind: (916) 651-4019. If you live in Santa Maria, call Abel Maldonado's office at (916) 651-4015. Maldonado is apparently the one Republican senator who there is a chance of getting to vote for it. The rest of the Republican caucus would rather go down on a sinking ship than raise taxes.
