Earthquake

When Edwin first IMed me "earthquake!" I immediately after typing "What? What?" logged on to the LA Times Web site. It was down, which I've never seen before, and that actually freaked me out. Less than 5 minutes passed and I tried again. This time the site was back up and with a one sentence alert. Probably less than 10 minutes later, a small brief, no more than 4 graphs, was online. In less than 20 minutes, there was a full-length article, a photograph, a Google map, a link to an interactive feature on "How to quake-proof your home" and more than 200 comments from readers reporting what minor damages they experienced, what city were they in and how it felt, and how it affected whatever they were doing.

Within the few minutes I started messaging people online who either lived in SoCal or had some connection to it. I think only 2 people didn't know, and this was probably only 3 minutes after it happened.

Sheesh. I feel like writing more on this, possibly giving my expert insight on the world of journalism and its affair with technology, but fuck it, the Express crossword is calling me. I will not be beaten!

P.S. Hope all my soCal people are OK and safe.
