I know there was much press about Google Reader going away. Personally, I don't use RSS feeds all that much and I think I used Google Reader once or twice then forgot it existed. The following is probably one that really makes me go 'aww' and nostalgic.
Before Google or Bing, the best search engine out there back in the day, at least for me was
Alta Vista. Apparently it's going away forever
July 8th. It was better than Yahoo. You could fine-tune a search if you knew the commands. It had Babelfish if you needed to translate other languages. It wasn't busy looking like Yahoo either. Yes, there were other search engines out there at the time (anyone remember Web Crawler?) but Alta Vista was my go-to browser for years before I started using Google instead. Ironically, Yahoo owns Alta Vista now and thus it's being retired.
Farewell Alta Vista... I guess you've earned your place in the sun.
