A Short Story
She sat down, twiddling her fingers as the rest of her friends left. It was the new year, a time for resolution, a time for trying new things, exploring new ideas, and testing ones own hypotheses.
It was also a Saturday night. Cold. Rainy. And there she was, sitting there, like an ass, just waiting to make her next move. She knew what she had to do. It had been eating her alive since the day she found out. Well, night anyway.
It was funny. In fact, at this moment, as she sat waiting for him, it made her giggle on the inside at the very thought of the discovery. It was after a phone conversation with him. She had been sitting in bed, eyes closed, imagination running in every which direction. And then it hit her, an old saying rang through her ears. She sat straight up in her bed. It had hit her.
She laughed as she sat in her corner chair of the coffee shop. The whole thing seemed to childish now that she had reminisced about the "discovery". She questioned herself again: Exactly what are you doing here? What's the point? Why torture yourself with the result?
She stood up from her table and chair, turned briskly to grab her coat, and proceeded to walk out the door; but as soon as she placed her hand on the "push" sign of the Starbucks door, he pulled his car into the space next to hers. They made eye contact. And yet again, she questioned: Why torture yourself with NEVER knowing the result? She took a deep breath, smiled in his general direction, and nervously walked outside to greet him.
"Hey," she paused and made eye contact, only to nervously slip out of it again, "Sorry for the urgent text message to meet me here at such an hour."
"It's fine. It really isn't that late. I think I know what needs to be said anyway. Or I could be completely wrong. We'll see." He gave her a wink and lead her into the warmth and comfort of the familiar Starbucks. They sat...in the same corner that she had previously occupied. 'Well,' she thought, 'might as well get it done with.' And she did. She straightened herself up, adjusting the way she was seated into a more comfortable position, and began pouring her sad song out.
"Listen, let me just say it. As I am sure you already know, I have had and have, as of right now, the strongest of feelings for you. To be blunt, I love you. And to redefine once more, I am IN love with you. Before you left, I had miniscule feelings that I thought would wash away with the days gone by; but after every conversation, after every day that slipped past, I found myself losing sleep, constantly thinking about you. I would go to sleep at night, telling myself to say goodbye, only to wake up the next morning having dreamt the night away about you. In an attempt to convince myself that it was just my mind playing tricks on my heart, I jumped from kiss to kiss with different men, searching for an excuse, an inclination of any sort that would tell me the truth; yet every new kiss was the same. A disappointment. You see, they all had one thing in common...they weren't you kissing me back."
She took a deep breath, made eye contact with her love, and continued: "Judging from your pale complexion, i can only imagine the million responses running through your mind. And please, all I ask is for you to continue the silence between us. All I ask is for you to take what I have said and store it away, wherever you see fit. I don't expect a fairytale ending to this night, nor do I expect the worst. All I can do is HOPE for this that has passed to cure whatever it is that has been eating me alive since the day I realized it. I just thought you should know that I, indeed, love you with all the power of my being. And if you ever need me, here..." she placed her hand over his heart, "I will always be for you."
With that said, she leaned across the table and pressed her warm lips to his in an attempt to say a final goodbye. But there she sank, there she sank into that comforting kiss that she had long awaited for, finally the kiss back she had waited so many months for.
She stood, and once again reached for her jacket, turned, and began walking out the door...
