Summary: Luke Braun has worked his whole life to please everybody else, yet he still manages to come up as a disappointment to his family. The only thing he has found to earn approval in such a life is a girl - a girl who stole his heart and then decided to break it.
Part Three
Callie sat resting on her elbow, she felt a little creepy just watching Luke while he slept. He was rolled over on his stomach, his arms folded under his pillow in support of his head. His face was smashed in to the pillow, his mouth slightly open, soft snore like noises escaping with each breath. Allowing her eyes to linger on his torso, Callie chewed her bottom lip; how was it that a guy like the one in bed next to her didn't have women knocking his door down?
Luke was funny, he was smart, and rather caring. Not to mention his looks, it was shallow of Callie to base anything on looks, but how could you not? He was toned, slightly tanned, and those blue eyes with that sandy blond hair - Luke Braun was the guy who came out of some silly Hollywood romantic comedy. Luke Braun was the guy that would sit in a tree, carving your names like you lived in some Nicholas Sparks novel.
Stirring slightly Luke laughed quietly, leaning closer Callie couldn't help but laugh a little as well when she realized Luke was still asleep. His face was half buried in his pillow, a small bit of facial scruff had begin to grow back, darkening his cheeks. Earlier in the evening his hair was been perfectly styled, Callie noticed it now had a few curls forming as it gave way to bedhead. Even asleep this man managed to be something else. The clock on the night stand told the daunting hour of the early morning, a time in which Callie should be half way home by now. After their last couple of sleep overs, she had been long gone the minute Luke fell asleep.
Wasn't that how it went? A guy convinced a girl to join him for the evening, then expected her gone by the time he woke up? It must have been working for Luke, he had woke alone the last three or four times, yet still called for more. Pulling her mess of curls back into an elastic that had been around her arm, Callie pulled back the covers, shivering a little as the cold air in the room hit her body. Picking up her red dress from the floor, she startled when a deep voice caught her off guard. This time Luke wasn't just talking in his sleep.
“You leaving me?” Luke mumbled, his voice muffled by the pillow he was still hiding in. The woman standing a few feet from his bed, in her panties was a rather pleasant sight. He knew she left the second she thought him to be asleep, not wanting to make her feel any pressure Luke normally laid in bed, pretending he was asleep and let her go.
“It's almost 3AM. I assumed I'd been here long enough.” Callie answered, pausing as she was about to pull on her dress.
Sitting up, Luke smirked, pushing his hand through his messed up hair. His blue eyes were sleepy, and his voice was groggy. “What kind of man would I be, if I let you go running around town at this hour by yourself?”
“You've let me go every other time.” Callie shrugged, holding her dress tightly in her hands. It was an argument Luke wasn't going to engage in. Rubbing his hands over his face. He'd let her have that one.
“Come back to bed.” Luke patted the empty space next to him. “I think we both know you'd rather be here.” he chuckled, sleepily.
“I have to work early, I really should go home.” Callie replied feeling a little hesitant to climb back in bed, no matter how warm and inviting it and Luke looked. It wasn't as if Callie was all that familiar with one night stands, or casual sex, but she had never been encouraged to stay until morning. Luke wasn't exactly the typical guy who had one night stands, it was evident when he had told her about Jenna.
“Then let me drive you.” Luke offered, pushing the blankets away from his body.
“I'm a big girl, I can get my own ride home.” Callie challenged.
“Oh, I have no doubt you can.” Luke smirked, walking toward her. Taking her dress from her, he tossed it back on the floor.
“I'm going to need that, if I'm going home and you're going to need more than your boxers.” Callie commented, her hands resting on Luke's forearms.
“I changed my mind. I don't want to drive you home, not right now.” Luke's voice was low. “Come on, Cal. Come back to bed with me, I promise I will drive you home later. If you decide you don't want to be seen with me in the daylight, I can have Caleb drive you home.” he teased. His hands slowly grazing across her lower back.
Callie shivered slightly. The idea of crawling back in bed was tempting. Crawling in bed with Luke Braun was dangerous, once she was in she may never want out. What had started as a harmless night of fun quickly turned into something else. Callie wasn't sure what it was exactly, or if Luke felt the shift, but there had been something. Last week, Luke had been shipped off to New York with Caleb, something about business for their father, in the few days he was gone Callie had nearly went nuts wanting him back. She had come to find she rather liked the feel of Luke's lips on hers, his hands playing with her body. She liked laughing at his silly little jokes, and his goofy personality. Luke had grown on her.
Before heading to New York, Luke had known Callie for the whole sum of six days. New York reminded Callie why her fling with Luke was fun, nothing short of some sort of rebound he was embarking on to get Jenna out of his system. In five days, he headed back to Tulsa, leaving Callie in Bangor as nothing more than some memory of a good time. When she had met the tall, handsome stranger in the bar and had agreed to going home with him, she had expected that to be the end of the line. When Luke called the next afternoon, asking to take her on a proper date, Callie leaped at the chance to spend some more time with him.
As they stood in the dimly lit bedroom, Luke's breath hot on her neck, Callie closed her eyes and swallowed hard. “Do you really want me to stay?”
“Yes.” Luke's voice was hushed, but determined.
Sex really did complicate everything! It was going to be difficult allowing Luke to go.
Come the hours of morning that brought the sunrise, Callie laid stretched out in the luscious bed that she'd spent the night in. Somewhere along the way Luke had convinced her to call in sick, even offering to call in a favour from an inside man if that is what she needed. When Callie hadn't bothered to wake up when her cell phone alarm went off, Luke managed to silence it and placed his own phone call. He had told Jamal that he had met somebody, it wasn't serious, just sex, but never the less Luke really liked her. Making the phone call to announce Callie Kingston absent from work, meant telling Jamal the identity of the woman who had his friend wrapped up the last few days.
“Callie Kingston?” Jamal repeated in sheer disbelief. Scoffing, he laughed to himself. “You've been fucking Callie Kingston!”
“It's become a little more complex, but yeah.” Luke smiled triumphantly, even though Jamal couldn't see him.
“Remember the asshole who took my job?” Jamal asked. Luke didn't verbally reply, which meant he was waiting for Jamal to go on. “That asshole is her! You have been fucking the one woman who makes me want to jump off of a fucking bridge.”
“Look, man” Luke laughed harder. “I don't know what kind of petty office war is going on with you two, but I need you to tell the higher ups that she won't be in today.”
“Oh this is perfect.” Jamal groaned. Luke could almost see him nervously pinching the bridge of his nose and shaking his head. “What do you want me to tell them? Huh? Do I tell them she can't come in, because the boss' grandson has been ploughing her all night?”
“You're good at bullshit, you'll think of something.” Luke finalized, ending the call before Jamal could say anything else.
By the time Callie was up and around, Luke was on his second cup of coffee, greeting her with a quick kiss he insisted she join him. Naturally, having coffee in your brother's kitchen with a girl who was barely more than casual sex should be the more awkward thing in the world. Luke didn't see it that way. He rummaged through Caleb's cupboards and fridge, trying to find something decent to eat. Coming up with a box of pop tarts and a bowl of strawberries, he apologized for Caleb's inability to properly shop.
The couple sat comfortably, hanging out at the kitchen table, Luke admired Callie's casual demeanour not many women would be this relaxed in this situation. When he had got out of bed to call Jamal, Luke had left a smaller tshirt and a pair of sweat pants on the end of the bed. It would be more relaxed than sitting around in her dress from the previous evening.
“Jamal was going to tell the office you weren't coming in today.” Luke informed Callie, between mouthfuls of pop tart.
“You do realize you didn't have to do that. I could have called, but thank you.” Callie smiled shyly.
The idea of Luke calling work for her worried Callie a little. Repeatedly, Luke told her that nobody in her office would think anything of them being together, but it bothered her. She had worked hard to get the job she had, letting it go because of some guy wasn't in the master plan. Not that this thing with Luke would matter in a few days.
“How do you feel about heading down to the water front and spending the afternoon?” Luke asked, a smile crossing his features.
“Trying to make the most of a dieing situation?” Callie chuckled lightly.
“I don't think I follow.” Luke's brow creased. He should have known better than to expect anything more than a couple of casual dinners and sex.
“I guess this is almost the end?” Callie commented, taking a sip of her coffee.
“The end of what?” Luke asked pouring a bit of cream in his own coffee.
“Whatever this is, with us. You'll go back to Tulsa and eventually we stop talking and...”
“Why? Are you getting rid of the internet or throwing away your phone?” Luke smirked. “I suppose,” he sighed, “I could learn to send smoke signals, or write a real letter.”
“You're going back to Oklahoma.”
“Oh, Callie sweetie, don't believe everything you hear. We have electricity there now.” Luke continued to tease her. “They installed it right before I left. It was amazing, we're hoping to have plumbing when I get home. Planes go there too.”
“Stop.” Callie hit him in the shoulder, shaking her head at him. “You know what I mean. You said it yourself, you have to go back soon.”
“What happened to all that talk about you coming to visit?” Luke raised the question, Callie shrugged. She was slightly amused he'd remember that from their first meeting. “You may have invited yourself, but my door is always open.”
Inviting herself to Tulsa had only been a line she'd thrown him, Callie never intended for Luke to take it as anything more. Gazing out the large kitchen window, Callie sipped her coffee quietly. Luke sat mindlessly picking at a random flower arrangement in the middle of the small table, no doubt it had been left by the house keeper. Callie's attention snapped back from the view out the window, when a new set of footsteps graced the ceramic flooring.
“Good Morning, Love Birds.” Caleb sang out, stretching his arms over his head. “Stop picking at my damn flowers.” he scolded his brother. Maybe Luke had been wrong? “How are we this morning?”
“Uh, we're uh, we're good.” Callie answered quickly, smiling at the other man.
She had met Caleb briefly a few days ago, when he had stopped by the office after the trip to New York. He had came in to drop off some things, when he decided to actively seek out the woman Luke had told him about. Caleb had dropped by her office casually, introduced himself and went on his way. He felt it was only fair he got to meet the girl, seeing as she had spent several nights in his spare bed with his little brother. The first thing Caleb had done when he'd saw Luke later that day was congratulate him. She was a nice girl, from what Luke said the two had hit it off and Caleb was happy for the younger.
“Morning, Sparky.” Caleb chirped at his brother, passing to get his own cup of coffee. “Mom wanted me to tell you, there is a dinner tonight at the big house.” The big house, a common term for prison, there was no wonder why the Braun boys referred to their grandparent's house in such a manner.
“Did you tell her I won't be there?” Luke asked, his attention on Caleb.
Slowly taking a sip from his freshly poured brew, Caleb licked his lips. “I tried, but you know how mom is. She wants you and your lady friend there by six thirty.”
“You told mom?”
“No, but you told Jamal. Jamal would have told Sarah; Sarah would have told Joss, who probably told Brielle. Did you know mom talks to Kathy Simmons almost daily?” Caleb shook his head, taking another drink of coffee. “I never told anybody, I thought about telling Brielle and Natalie when I saw them in New York, but it is your news to tell.”
“If there is a problem, I can...” Callie began, only to have Luke butt in.
“No.” Luke forced a smile, glaring at Caleb. “No problem. You should come to dinner, it'll be nice.” It would also stop Luke from wanting to stab himself with a fork. “But, if you come to dinner then you're going to have to plan a trip to Tulsa too.”
“Is that right?” Callie lifted her mug to her lips, taking a sip.
“If words gets out you really do exist, then you're gonna have to go.” Caleb nodded. “Otherwise, you'll have Jenna Murdock landing on your door step, wanting to meet you.”
