Learning New Things

I just learned that you can set your LiveJournal so that only registered LJ users can comment, only friends can comment, or even disallow comments entirely! This might be a really neat way to avoid getting somewhat suspiciously anonymous comments on posts I made about four years ago that don't appear to be connected in any way to what I was writing about, and in some instances (i.e. one) aren't appear to be in French.

Neat! Keen! Groovy! Boffo!

I also learned just recently that the first known usage of the word "Boffo" was in 1949. Which leads me to ask the question "Who in the hell keeps track of these things?" I mean suppose, just suppose, I invent a word tomorrow that becomes popular enough to be included in the Websters Dictionary in 2031. Are they going to cite 2011 as the year the word "Crutchblongomastic" was used? Do the people at Webster or Oxford have agents walking around listening to people's conversations? A lot of people got paranoid about the Patriot Act way back when, but how do we know that the WorldWide Dictionary Illuminati hasn't been secretly taping our conversations for years, just so that they can inform us as to the exact moment when someone first said the "Lesbian" as a something other then a term for a native of the island of Lesbos? Should be wearing a tinfoil hat?

Oh...I also learned that Livejournal's spell check doesn't include the word "Livejournal".
