To Have a Giant's Strength
"You could order men racked."
His father has, to flush out conspiracies against the crown--but only for information, never as punishment. His father is a hard man, but not cruel.
Yet it was strange to sit at the other end of that long laden table and be expected to eat while somewhere under their feet--where no one could see or hear--a man was being broken.
At last his father said, simply, These are the choices you will face.
Would Merlin do evil to protect those he loves?
He meets Merlin's gaze. "I would hope to find another way."
