Round Earth's Imagined Corners
After Muraki shows him the back way in, it's only a matter of time.
Now in the flickering light huge serpents grapple. A phoenix burns itself out across the sky, weeping. Everything smells of blood. Before him is a white domed building surrounded with desperately twisting shadows. Strange ropes, dark and without substance, are wrapped around his hands -- he can almost feel cool white sheets against his back and can't understand why. He laughs and the earth cracks open, dark forms spilling out. This has all happened before, long ago, the memory worn down to nearly transparent delicacy -- and they thought they could just lock him away and forget.
The shadows pooled at the base of the building are beaten back -- the grove, the stairs, past piles of bodies -- to the last shinigami still standing.
(Someone keeps calling Tsuzuki's name, calmly, like a bell tolling in the distance.)
-- the dome cracks and the stairs shatter. The man falls to one knee -- all the shadows falter. The last bonds holding Tsuzuki break. He's tired of being tied down.
Golden sparks fly upward. Stars ripple in the sky and go out. There is no moon on the night Meifu begins to burn.
