Yes, but under protest

Watched Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957) and was, on the whole, impressed. Some scenes -- the knight playing chess with Death, the line of dancers silhouetted against the horizon -- have been spoofed time and again, but they're still powerful. It's an intellectual, Brechtian sort of movie -- definitely an art house film -- but that's balanced by it's visual beauty and the humor that does crop up quite often (Death comes for an actor, who asks Isn't there an exception for actors. I've got a contract.) Of course, Bergman deals with some very big, serious question in the vein of Does God exist? Does life have meaning? -- like all serious things, it can easily be made ridiculous, and there are some scenes that creak and groan under all the Deep Thoughts. But the way every priest is really Death is beyond neat, the quality of acting is high, and any movie that has the protagonist ask a witch about to be burned how to met the Devil since he'd like to ask him about God is worth seeing.
