I'm going away this weekend (to see
lady_leonida for her birthday festivities), and I suddenly came to the realisation that I can't possibly watch nine episodes in the three hours I have before I have to leave for the train - but I have some things to say before the next episode airs. So, here we go!
WARNING: Here be spoilers!
First of all, we really should have seen Rory's death coming. He said one of the lines that you never ever say on Doctor Who if you want to make it to the end of the episode: "I trust the Doctor with my life."
At the time, that line made me flail and squee because I was delighted at the level of trust between them. Now ... different story. (And by the end of the episode I'd forgotten it. It made me nearly cry a minute ago.)
... Now that I'm re-watching, I have to say - there are so many good lines in this episode. I'll have to go through the whole thing and point out some of them when I do the actual re-watch. :) So. On with the observations.
At the end of Amy's Choice, in one of the dreams Rory is killed by an alien and turned to dust, his body essentially disappearing. In the other, the TARDIS explodes.
At the end of Cold Blood, Rory is killed by an alien and taken by the crack, his body (OK, and his existance) essentially disappearing. The Doctor finds a piece of exploded TARDIS inside the crack.
Does anyone else find those two scenarios oddly resonant? They're not identical, but I feel that they're similar enough to be ... odd. I mean, this is Doctor Who. Why put in two very similar death-scenes for Rory, plus two exploding/exploded TARDISes?
Let's think about this - in Amy's Choice, Rory dies. (I vaguelly remember him walking towards the window and blocking the Doctor from attack? I may be making that up, though.) Despite the fact that all other deaths of this sort have been instantaneous, he has enough time to say goodbye to Amy. He dies with her right beside him. He then turns to dust, leaving behind only his ponytail.
In Cold Blood, Rory dies. (He dies pushing the Doctor out of the way. If I'm right about Amy's Choice, this is another similarity, but as I said I could be wrong about his other death.) He dies slowly enough to say goodbye to Amy. He dies with her right beside him. He then gets taken by the crack, leaving behind the box with the engagement ring in it.
I think the exploding TARDIS thing is fairly self-explanatory ...
Anybody else seeing this?
I don't know what it means, but I feel really strongly that this is significant. There's also the fact that these two episodes come close together in the line-up (there's only The Hungry Earth between them) - far enough apart for it not to be obvious, but close enough for it to be resonant.
Maybe the Deam Lord (the Doctor's unconscious self) was sending the Doctor (his conscious self) a warning about the future? Maybe it's some kind of clue? (I mean, they got Rory back from that other death - maybe they'll get him back from this one?)
... Also, I just noticed, Cold Blood is narrated by the Homo Reptilia leader (the guy who has the meeting with Nasreen and Amy). From 1,000 years in the future. I wonder if that's significant, too? I know that The End of Time was narrated by one of the Time Lords, but it's not really usual for Doctor Who, is it? Hmm ...
I wonder if they're going to go back/forward to 1,000 years in the future (when Homo Reptilia emerge again, with Tony & Nasreen) at the end of the series. After all, Nasreen did say, "Come and look for us." ...
Lots of interesting things in this episode! :) Makes you think, doesn't it?
I can't wait to do the full re-watch after this weekend. There are so many little things, I'm sure, that are there to be noticed ... See, I love Doctor Who, even when it does things like this. It's interesting!
