Here's what I learnt from attending a lecture by the dodgy Soci lecturer today:
1. We live in a strongly consumerist culture where identity is often tied to possessions.
2. We often judge people based on what they can afford to buy/ spend on.
3. Somehow he linked consumerism to gender issues .. bring on the feminist theories. -.-
4. Soci seems like one big slippery slope argument
5. Supermodels have the 'body of a mosquito'.
6. Rihanna's 'Umbrella" has really retarded lyrics eh eh eh.
7. There are people in the world who still call it "Macintosh" and can't tell the iphone from the ipad.
It's quite interesting I must say. Does get you thinking and questioning the validity of some of his claims.
The identity question is something that is quite relevant and pertinent today though. Are we tying our identity and worth to what we possess, what we want and what we work towards? Is the ultimate goal of life to amass enough money, retire early and be able to afford all possible luxuries?
