[When the New Year's Eve broadcast interrupted Beyond Birthday's regularly scheduled programming, he continued to watch with dull eyes. It was the same as usual - people with no names, no lifespans. The people on telly were dead, it was that simple. In other words, they were not really in the 1950's - but it was something that B had never cared about.

But suddenly, a shot of the crowd of millions was shown. To anyone else watching, it would be an ordinary bunch of people.

To B - it was a single face lit up with a name, and the question marks that replaced the lifespan in Mayfield. A young man who was facing away.

He fell out of his chair, feeling pain as he looked back up at the telly with eyes like saucers. The man was only there for a blink of an eye, but ... he had seen it. A LIVING PERSON.

... So what were the odds that only one person in such a humongous crowd was still alive? Were he not already accustomed to death, the thought would have sent shivers up his spine.

Either way, it was a clue that only he could have seen. Was he to be held responsible for it? After all, B never wanted to solve Mayfield. And yet, here it was: his old detective training called to him again, almost as though he was meant to do it. But no. B would not solve it. It was nothing that he was interested in.

... He was the defeated one.

And as such, he would leave it in L's capable hands.

[Hey Mayfield: it's that indistinguishable scrambled voice on your phones again. Goodness, it sounds very serious.]

Citizens of Mayfield - this is L.

It has come to my attention that many of you are conducting your own investigations on this case. My investigation is going very well, but ultimately, it does not matter if I solve the case or if you do, so I would like to provide you with the information that I have.

I submit to you that Mayfield is not, nor has ever been, in any year in the 1950s. The broadcast shown to you on New Years' Eve did exist, but it is long dated, and as I hope you've all figured out, full of holes. However, if anyone would like to hear it again, I have transcribed it in full. There is a seven percent chance that something incredibly sinister surrounds the events shown. I will be glad to elaborate on these, however I would expect something in return.

So, Mayfield, answer me this:

Who is William MacCready?
